Best free photo software

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend me a decent free photo editing software package? The mrs is getting into photography but shes scared of photoshop (and the price) so its got to be a freebie. GIMP is on my list but having never used it i dont know what it includes. She wants it to have some filters, clone tool/healing brush etc, basically as feature packed as a free bit of software allows. If a freebie doesnt usually come with stuff like that then forgive me for being naive.

Gimp has all of that and more. Why not just download it and try it ?

Paint.Net also has all that and more. Not so many guides on the internet as GIMP but I found the user interface friendlier.

As well as Gimp and Paint.net why not try Canons own DPP.

Thanks all, I use CS5 personally but having never used the freebies i didnt know what to recommend. Might even try GIMP myself

Been playing with this, the free version Helicon Filter http://www.heliconsoft.com/heliconfilter.html

Also it works on raw files!

GIMP is good but quite complicated, though I suspect no more complicated than some of the bought packages.

Photoscape is much simpler, but can still do a few things, and Picasa, which is really a cataloging program, it also has some limited editing functions

picasa is good and does raws.
also has spot removal(heal) retouch.
