Best flashgun to be used with pocket wizards

Hey All just wondering what your thoughts are on the best flashgun to be used along side pocket wizards?

Shall i stay nikon and hunt down SB28 units on ebay or can i look elsewhere?
 
Old Nikon flashes are generally regarded as the best and Ebay as probably the worst place to go shopping for them :lol:
 
lol! ok where would be the best place to buy them then?
tell me your secrets :D
 
Apologies for diving in here, but are these old flashes rated over the SB900, and if so, why?

...and (in the SB-900) Nikon dropped support for some of the old TTL modes used on film cameras and some early DSLRs.
 
i ended up picking up some really good condition unused 2 x SB25 great flash.
 
You use the flashes on manual when you use PWs with them.

If you only plan to use them with PW's, you may also want to look for Canon 540EZ or the one's Flash In The Pan sells.

No they can't be controlled in camera. They are used entirely in manual mode - you connect a Pocket Wizard to the camera - via the hot shoe - and a Pocket Wizard to the flash - via a short cable. You can choose which one of four channels to use but you would preferably need to use a meter to get the corrct exposure - or just trial and error and check the results on the screen. I use a meter with mine.
 
You could use a Nikon SU-800 as a controller - works with Nikon flashes using infra red to trigger - but check first if you have flashes that are compatible. SB-600, SB-800 and SB-900 are - and maybe some older ones too. Then you use Nikon's iTTL and set the power of each flash from the commander with the system calculating exposure. Works great indoors - with line of sight and can be Ok outdoors too but if it's bright sunlight you may get problems.
 
If money is no object then the SB800 / 900s are top notch.

However, the fact that you can buy 3 used, decent, flashes for the price of 1 sb900 ..... go figure.

I've got SB26s and SB28s that I use with cheap triggers and I've never yet (fingers crossed) had a fail. They work through walls as well! If you're patient you can pick up the flashes for £50-70 of fleabay and about another £30+ for triggers (depending on how many receivers you need).
