Yes
I have a shiny new Mac Book Pro, and all though I am not a massive fan of post production editing I need a package that that I can teak a few things, mainly I like the black and white effect with a single object in color, a bit of cropping etc.

Can anyone reccomend a package, I am just about to go back to university so I think I can get Lightroom for about £50 but open to ideas from all

I guess you could use Aperture, which is £45 on the Mac App Store - alot cheaper than the £130 in-store!

I was actually wondering about using that myself - I was trying to find out if it did fade correction here.

Simon,

If that is all you want then Iphoto is a good bet. It is simple to use, quick to learn, and does just fine for B/W conversion, contrast/exposure/sharpen, etc. I'm not sure about selective color in the newest iphoto, but the older one didn't (iphoto 6 or 7). For that you'll need to bump up to either aperture or elements. I went aperture as I wanted editing and cataloging in one place. I loved iphoto, so aperture was a snap, especially once the price dropped in the app store.

Thanks,
Rick

If you want super basic features then maybe try Picasa.

I've tried both Lightroom and Aperture on my Macbook and the former wins every time! Runs surprisingly well on this wee 11" air too.

No it's a lot cheaper than the £173.00 in store price.

Aperture is worth the £45 over iPhotos, just for the ability to turn faces off.

Aperture/Lightroom  people swear by both , for me Aperture wins by miles.

Aperture 3 is a great program. I personally prefer it over Lightroom, but there's not much in it.

There's also a cheap CS5 alternative called pixelmator, doesn't do everything CS5 does but it's only £18.99 from the app store, it works with Aperture (as does CS5).

Aperture for me. Great value from the App Store. Won't do selective colouring though, (I don't think Lightroom will either).

You can changed selected colours to an extent in Lightroom using the adjustment brush and do a lot with individual colours using the sliders in the develop module so it depends on what you are trying to selectively colour

Likewise in Aperture, the brushes are much more advanced in Aperture 3 as well. Really powerful. As you just bought it, did you buy the one-2-one sessions with it? Unlimited lessons at any Apple Store? I've done a few Aperture lessons and some of the guys/girls there are really really good and give some great tips.

Selective colouring would be as simple as do you black/white conversion, then choose instead of brushing in, brushing away the effect, make certain you have the excellent edge detection on and you can just be rather rough with it :)

Best £45 quid ever spend if you like photography.

With Aperture you can so some selective colouring as said above, certainly not to the extent as in PS, and I'm no expert so maybe there are thing you can do that I've not learnt yet, but a quick couple on mins.

I don't think you can totally replace a colour but can alter it's hue.

I love this forum. I learn something every day, thanks.

OP get Aperture....see what you can do...?

+1 for Aperture. Will do 99% of what I need, I hardly every even open Photoshop nowadays. Suggest you watch the how-to vids on the apple site. Very helpful.
