Hi Guy’s.

Now lets not get into a debate over the rights, wrongs, views or preference of taking your DSLR and lenses on holiday. My choice is not to do so, end of :shrug:

So that taken as read, can anyone give me a view on what they would say is the best compact to buy for both holidays and to have in my briefcase on a daily basis. You know, for those unexpected photo opportunities that always come along when you least expect them.

I am thinking os something like the Canon G12 but certainly wide open to other suggestions. :thumbs:

I love my Panasonic Lumix, exposure spot on, great IQ and very good telephoto and image stabiliser.
 
I've been pleased with the results from my Oly XZ-1, couple of examples below. It's well made, has manual and auto modes plus a built-in ND filter and the best bit is the lens aperture ranges from f1.8 to f2.5 with a useful zoom of 6-24mm (28-112mm equivalent).

In fact the only downside I've found is that I sometimes press the 'play' button when taking it out of the case. :)

Panasonic Lumix LX5 or Canon PowerShot S95 - They both have pros and cons. I have an LX5 and love it to bits.
 
Agree about the Fuji X10, worth waiting to have a look at. Or a possible update to the Canon S95.
 
I'd go for whatever has the widest aperture you can get as it'll allow you to shoot at lower ISO and keep the shutter speed up as much as possible.
 
Well, I own a 7D myself and my portable camera for holidays is the Panasonic LX5, I have to say I am impressed with the quality of the kit and the picture useful range of 24-90 35mm equiv f2.0 to f3.3.

P.S For versality, the LX5 allows me to utilise my Lee Filter system too
 
I can see I am going to have to go and play with the G12 and the LX5 in the local stores to see which has the right feel for me.

Sorry, but anyone who thinks they are into photography and then leaves their camera at home is really not into photography. :shake:
 
The S95 is more pocketable. The LX5 has a wider angle zoom. The G12 and Nikon equivalent are rather clunky in comparison.
 
You don't need an slr to be into photography!

New sony zoom compact hx7v looks quite good too. 10x zoom so you won't miss much.

I sold my Canon 5D2 and all the lenses and took the plunge with a Leica X1.

I've never regretted it - I'm able to take my camera with me easily, and I don't have everyone looking at me when I take a photo.

Superb image quality as well - will eventually end up with a Leica rangefinder (M8 /9).
 
It's a common question and one which I've had to address myself as my Sony A700 and a bag of glass is just too much to haul around - I'm on holiday remember! But I like nice photos too! My solution is the Lumix FZ38. It's as manual or automatic as I want it to be, has an 18x stabilised zoom, is fairly noiseless from ISO 80-200, usable at 400, pretty ugly above that, though it shoots RAW which enables shots to be rescued when there's absolutely no other choice. Oh, and it's a very decent video camera too, subject to a 30min max shot length. Battery life is great and unlike most Panasonics it can use cheapie extra batteries.
