Best area for Deer in Richmond Park

I'm planning a trip to Richmond Park in the morning, initially for sunrise but then aiming to switch to Deer.

Although we live close, we are over the river and right next to Bushy park so that is my usual stalking ground, but it's the annual cull this month in Bushy, so no entry till 8am.

Does anyone know the best areas in Richmond park to typically find the deer. I have some usual haunts in Bushy (which I'm happy to share), but I'm less familiar with Richmond for deer.

Any views on where the deer typically hang out. I've seen them around Pen ponds before when I've been for sunrise, but would have though some of the heather and wooded areas would be worth a visit.

They'll pop up everywhere, but the spots on those maps are as good as any to start. For red deer, I'd also investigate north-west of the main ponds.

A reminder to everyone who might be heading in Richmond Park this year not to overlook that the rugby world cup means there's road closures around Twickenham on weekends until the end of October. Shouldn't be an issue for anyone doing early mornings but plan ahead for any afternoon travel!

Thanks, do you mean the woods immediately NW of the ponds, or the area further over across the road?
 
Note the Bushy Park September cull (male deer) ends this Friday 25th. The females are culled in November.

As I live 2 minutes from Bushy Park that is where I tend to go. But when in Richmond I always enter via Richmond Gate and check out the area to the north of Sidmouth Wood. Then head around Sidmouth Wood down towards the ponds if I havent found any deer. Thats one reason I go to Bushy - the deer are easier to find. I enter via Lion Gate and check the area between the main car park and the playground.

I sometime park at the Sheen gate end and walk straight across the fields heading to the wooded area on the right hand side over the road. Or I'll use the lodge car park then head towards the bellowing.

Got a couple of trips planned myself.
 
Thanks all. I did go, got there stupidly early to try some star shots. It was pretty eery, the deer were bellowing a surprising amount before sun up, which was quite disconcerting when I didn't know where they were in the dark!!!

I found a lot of deer in the open areas either side of spankers hill wood, I went for some longer, wide angle shots as something different.

I downloaded last night and aim to process and upload maybe tonight.

I will definitely go back in the coming weeks and am looking forwards to bushy park opening again this weekend!

We need to organise a TP shoot in bushy. We did this 3 or 4 years ago, Di you and I went on to Richmond park after. Would be good to get something next month.
 
I had fun last year in the ultra-thick dawn fog. Despite being their the day before, I completely lost my bearings! I too could hear them but see no further than about fifteen feet. If I hadn't had a smartphone with me allowing me GPS my way to the right area, I'd have been lost for a while.
 
Royalparks.org.uk always has the current opening times for vehicle traffic, but any particular entrance might open slightly earlier/later depending on the person opening the gates. The foot entrances are meant to be open 24/7 (except during the cull season). There's residential areas without parking restrictions to be found by some of the gates.
 
Sorry to resurrect an old thread but can you see them near Pembroke Lodge or King Henry's Mound (I wanted to see the historic sites and wildlife at the same time).

I have always wanted to go to Bushy Park so if a TP shoot were to be organised I'd join in.

You have a chance of seeing the deer pretty much anywhere in the park David, I have often seen them in the area across the road from the lodge and henry's mound, but you are unlikely to see them close tot he lodge / mound due to the high foot traffic of people. They tend to wander around the less populated areas, assuming you intend to go during "normal" hours. You won't have to walk far from there to find them. Head across the road around Sidmouth wood and you will have a good chance to see them, but of course nothing is guaranteed with wildlife!
