I've just bought a Nikon D7000 and i was wondering what the best 50mm lens would be. I'll be using the camera to take street photography so it will need to be quick.
When i had my D300 i used a 50mm F1.4D.
any help would be great

Thank you

To be honest, all of the 50mm primes are more than good enough.

The new Sigma 50mm Art is meant to be outstanding but it costs a fair old whack, generally the most recommended nowadays is the new AF-S f/1.8 which is meant to be better than the f/1.4 in a few ways and is cheaper too.

The new Sigma is undoubtedly great, but it is huge compared with the Nikons. There's a pic of one in the Siggy 50mm thread on a D810 and it looks huge on that let alone on a 7k.

The Nikon 50mm f1.8's are just great value, lightweight with great IQ. The D is tiny and can be picked up for £60-70. (£75.00 new from hdew)

I have a 50 1:8G for my 7000. I tried a D, which was great value, but the G was quicker and quieter.

60mm is better on crop imo
theres a tamron f2 macro, nikon macro, and holga...

I've been advised by salesmen to stick with my old (nay, venerable!) screw driven f/1.8 AF 50mm which cost me £40 a good few years ago. Since the D7000 has the in body AF motor, I would recommend that version for bang for buck.

Someone (Pookyhead maybe?) recently posted an image of that lens on a D800 and the level of detail was amazing. The newer versions may be sharper in the lab but in reality they are all sharp enough. I guess the only thing the newer ones offer are quieter focus with internal focus.

Thanks for the link Minnnt, pingu666 i have been looking at the 60mm, but i do prefer the 50mm.
Thats interesting Nod, i've been told to go for the G

But Nod already has a 50mm, the point being it wasn't worth upgrading. Obviously if you don't have one already then the G version is marginally better optically (but lacks the aperture ring which you need for use on old film bodies).
