Hi all,

Hoping to get your advice on something please. I am a keen portrait photographer who is interested in starting up a small business eventually. I use Photoshop CS3 and have just downloaded the trial version of LR3 (which I aim to use most).

What I would like to know, after doing lots of research and reading, is what would be the 10 (or so) most popular post processing techniques? Eg. contrast, sharpening, vignettes, etc. Is there a place where I'm able to find this info online, or on this forum? There is so much conflicting information around about the best techniques that I find it very confusing. I just want to learn some good techniques to make my photographs simple and beautiful.

I mostly take pictures of families, children and babies, in outdoor settings or indoors with natural light. I'm not interested in fashion photography procedures, altering skin/faces etc., just general portrait stuff.

Any opinions would be most welcome! ;)

Virginia.

The reason there is so much conflicting information on the net and why there is no definitive best techniques is because it's so subjective! My best is most certainly not someone else's. If an image is good in your eyes it should only need minimal pp anyhow. 99% of the time if something needs doing you will know it.

Keep it as natural as possible. I only ever do gentle adjustments to portraits.

Apart from the basic editing, I'd say many people favor skin softeing (subtle) eye and teeth whitening, boosting the eye contrast, things like that.
You might want to check out this book. Professional.Portrait.Retouching.Techniques.for.Photographers, by Scott Kelby.

I really learned a lot from that book, I'm planning on going through again now that I've got a wacom tablet.
