Hi all,

I'm a bit late to join the challenge as I've been on a long holiday without any means to upload photos.

But I've taken photos, and I will try to continue taking photos in the correct week, although I may allow myself a bit more time for post processing and uploading.

A lovely shot Bernd and a sad sight to see, although personally I would have stood a little further to the right in order to get a slightly more acute angle on the jetty and maybe a little less sky.

Thanks Elaine. Unfortunately I couldn't get more to the right without getting the new jetty in the picture.

Just realised, I don't know my right from my left  I meant left of course, closer to the jetty!

Of course left, you mentioned a more acute angle! I've got no excuse for that :cautious:

I really like both images - the lines with the sudden break make the first quite eye catching ( I don't think there is too much sky and I feel the image suits the central location of the subject).

The colours contrasting against the blue sky are very striking.

Good luck with your 52 :)

Two nice shots as said above the break in the jetty make for a nice subject,

And for metal good composition I love the orange tiles against that blue sky works very well.

Hi Bernd
Welcome to the show :-)
What a great start!
Old.....Amazing old pier....and almost also qualifies for Metal too!
But your Metal shot is cool too. A study of rust.

I really like the pier image, especially as it has a bit missing, it makes it all the more interesting

2 nice pictures to kick off with, both with nice colour, metal is a nice contrast between the roof and that blue stuff above it, we have a similar thing here but its grey!

Bernd, Hi. Really like your metal image, like th cloolur of the roof against the sky.

Hi Bernd,

Old - Nice detail and I like the way you have lined the top of the pier up with the horizon.
Metal - The colours on this work really well together.

Thank you all for your comments!

Unfortunately I'm back in Britain now, where the sky is indeed grey. :(

Hi Bernd!
Old - nice subject, I'd probably echo the above re composition and possible softness around the railings? Is there a HDR effect added?
I did a quick edit (hope you don't mind!) to the levels. For example, the colours seem a little dull - an easy tweak by pulling up the levels as per the below screenshot:

Grabbing the right slider and moving it the left (where the histogram starts) results in this:

As you can see, the colours pop that little bit more. :)

Metal - I like abstract shots like this! Gorgeous blue sky too. I'd have maybe cropped a bit tighter to the antenna (and lost the vent thing) just to simplify the shot a little. Everything else is spot on though!

Good start! :)

Thanks Matt, that looks much better!

I didn't use any HDR effects, I copied both pictures with only minimal cropping straight to flickr. The sky really was that blue... :)

Hi Bernd.
I prefer the colurs of your original shot over Matt's edit, but somehow matt's edit appears sharper than the origonal. Great positioning to get the pier running along the horizon like that.

Hi Bernd. Good choice for Old. Not sure about standing underneath that A/C compressor for Metal ... looks a bit unsafe with all those rusty supports. Nice colour though

Hi Bernd

Lovely old pier shot ... over processed, but of course it's supposed to be. (y)

I think in this case sharper is better, as it is in almost every case. I wonder if that's because Matt's edit has increased the contrast along the pier.

02 Captive: Rush Hour
by Bernd, on Flickr

This photo is a candidate for a re-shoot. Initially I wanted to shoot the closed doors of a super densely loaded (i.e. people squished right in) tube train. But as most platforms are quite narrow, I couldn't get the shot I wanted with the lens I brought. And then, when I brought a wider lens, the tube was not as busy at the time I went.

So this is a shot of the platform in not quite peak rush hour.

Old - I like the broken pier the original and the sharpened one but agree with Elaine maybe more of an angle and a bit less blue.

Metal - I hope those struts are as strong as the colours was it safe to be standing there?

Captive - I like this shot but the one you wanted sounds good too.

Captive ... yes it works! .... I'm a sucker for people pics and this is a good one.

Nice interpretation for the theme nice leading lines and b/w works really well.

Sure are Captive Bernd - great idea for the theme. Like all the movement and the multiple points of interest for the viewer.

Metal - Nice take on the theme like the contrast of the red against the bright blue sky

Captive Great idea for the theme whenever I go on the tube and its busy I feel like I'm captive

Thank you all for your nice comments on my take on captive! Maybe I won't attempt a re-shoot then

That's unusual (in a good way). Not heard of that exhibition, before reading your explanation I thought you had taken out some random charachter/toys and set this up yourself.

I like the focus and use of DOF, having someone in the background shows the scale.

:clap:Very clever Bernd. I too thought the figures were placed by you ha ha. Nicely composed with that real figure and movement in the bg.

Thank you Steve and Carl. Hopefully next week's theme will be something cycling related, on the other side of the Gherkin would be a suitable Ai Weiwei sculpture :D
