Hi,

This is my thread for the 52/2010 challenge. I think the idea of a themed challenge is a great way to, well, challenge myself so this thread will mark my progress.

I'm a little late starting, I might fill in the first three weeks at some point but I want to stay on target for now.

Week 6 - Present
Week 5 - Speed
Week 4 - Street
Week 3 - Chopped
Week 2 - Poetry
Week 1 - Curve

Delivery at Night (on flickr)

I commute by bicycle every day. Most of the journey is on a small A road that is not graced with any street lights so I have to rely on the puny bike light and the illumination from passing vehicles. As I cross a motorway and enter the town the street lights start in a gracious curve like sirens luring lorries. I have often thought that they would make an interesting subject for study but in two years of winters I had not felt studious when cycling past, my own siren of warmth and coffee calling. When I saw the theme Street I instantly knew what I was going to do.

This isn't actually the image I had in my mind when I started. I still think there is the photo I wanted to be had, but I will need to take a longer lens to capture it - there is a slight decline towards the lights and they look better from further back. When I realised this last night I decided to combine some of the curved path of lights with a light trail shot. I took quite a few from various heights and this is the one I liked the best.

I have more heights, but only from there down. I was using the bike as a tripod and that was the highest stable platform I had.

Although it didn't actually cross my mind to try and go higher as I was trying to get the pattern of the street lights. When I go back I'll keep that in mind.

I like this very much, particularly the way the higher lights draw a nice diagonal through the street lights.

I like the way the top lights fade into the shot. Nice and clean but maybe just a few seconds more on the exposure to get some longer trails. Good luck going back to get the shot you want.

Love the high lights streaking through the air. :)

very nice effort, one of the best I have seen on this weeks theme.

Well, stopped off again on Thursday and got a big fat nothing. I couldn't seem to get the camera steady, the turbulence from the passing lorries kept wobbling it. In the end I got cold and fed up with the drizzle and continued home. Not very dedicated I know!

Welcome to the 52! :)

I really like this - the composition is good, the extra set of red lights from the lorry are a real bonus and I like the starbursts in the street lights.:clap::clap:

Look forward to seeing Week 5.

Jean

Thank you all

Wow, thanks!

Nice effort Ben - has a real Street feel to it. Very well done!

Very nicely done Ben, I like it, the high level lights really help

welcome to the 52's

Good shot. I will be taking some shots of the Mrs valentines flowers when they get around to blooming. Also bought for love not photography reasons. :whistling:

I like that, on topic and definitely seasonal. I'm wondering what it might be like with a slight vignette, just a subtle one to take the edge of the top left corner. Only a minor gripe though, like the image as it is.

not just bought so I could take a photo of it!

Hmm, I sense a possible recurring theme amongst the male 52ers! Expect to see me post my 'present' shot tomorrow...

Not much to say about this really, a little pre-Valentine's present for my wife (and of course, not just bought so I could take a photo of it!)

I wonder how many other 52ers' wives received roses this weekend to fit with the theme ;)

Very nice, crisp and clean shot. I would have like the rose rotated just a little so that it was facing out and we had more a view of the inner petals.
And I'm not sure about the red "with love" writing. I know you didn't put it there, but it's distracting me a bit. Maybe a bit of selective desaturation to tome that down?
Those are very minor niggles though - it really is a very nice shot.

I like your light trails too. I'm sure I looked at these, but I obviously didn't leave a comment. Particularly like the height and the ghost van in the distance.

Beautiful fresh rose, what more could she want, dinner, morning tea in bed or the washing up done all day.

Ben, I like it, simple and clear

Hmmm? You can't still be reaping the benefits of those roses you got? :suspect:
