Yes
Bempton, is a long trip for me and I wonder do the birds still fly in the rain (I guess yes as they are seabirds) and is there somewhere dry you can photograph them from?

They will still fly but there are no covered hides. Hopefully you will get breaks from the rain. It is a wonderful location.

There is a visitor centre to take refuge in but access to the birds is strictly out in the open cliff edges.

Thank you both that is what I feared but I could take an umbrella and photograph from there.

I went over the weekend, long trip for me too from Anglesey, the weather wasn't has good as forecast but its didn't rain much. As has been said there's no cover out on the cliffs and tbh the visitor center isn't huge so I'd try to go when the forecast is reasonable.

I went last week. Had 1 day of wind and rain and got soaked to the skin. Won’t be going again if rain is forecast as its just not worth it. Great place though.
It is a shame that there are not sheltered hide. Rye Harbour is a great place for seabirds and all the hides are covered.

I can add to this - if possible go when the wind is coming from the sea - the birds get closer

I'd say the opposite Dave. When the wind is coming in off the land side you're going to get them facing you as they come in to land, otherwise you get them backing in.

2 1/2 hours each way for me and I don't bother going if its an east wind

Are you sure because I went there 3 years ago and I got closer photos than this year. I mentioned it to someone there this year and he said when the wind is blowing the birds towards you (and maybe I have misremembered it)

There are big variations there from day to day depending on the wind - some days they fly at a nice height, other days they are frustratingly below you.

However, birds will generally take off and land facing the wind given a choice, so its a major factor for birds in flight

Been going there for quite a few years and thanks to the sheers size of the location I can’t recall ever having had a bad day there . I tend to go for a weeks holiday where possible to miss bad weather days but never as yet been caught in the rain there . Also try to specialise a species one day go for gannets ,next fulmars, next puffins etc otherwise there’s simply to much to take in
