So,

I've got me an sb900.

Can anybody give me some advice on the settings I should stick to for my first few shooting experiences? Any advice at all is appreciated at this stage.

How do I get started?

My plan is to do a bit of reading on the subject, but to learn through trial and error.... but I don't know how to start the 'trial' bit, so I'm pretty much all error right now.

cheers

its sort of hard to tell you settings because were not there :)

however give shutter speed of 125 or 60 and f8. apeture will control the amount of light from the flash. so if the shots too dark open wider, too light stop down.

it is a very very rough idea and other will have their own info. just a place to start from.

The first thing i would do is read the manual for the flash and then the flash part of your camera manual.
The thing i would watch first off if the 900 is same as the 800 is the mode the flash is in, if the display shows TTL>BL>FP, the flash will balance with daylight so your shutter speed becomes relevant as if it's too slow you will get ghosting, if you press the mode button once the BL will disappear, in this mode the flash becomes the main light source and daylight doesn't become as relevant unless you want it to.

Once you get used to the flash it can open up all sorts of possibilities, i use my 800 a lot of the time in wireless mode and letting the on board flash either fill in or nine times out of ten I disable the output of the on board flash so all it does is control the 800.
