Hello all, I have always been into photography but only ever used an slr like camera. I now want to purchase a slr camera bit don't know what to go for? I want to photograph animals and wildlife. Is it worth getting a second hand one to Start with? Not sure what lens I should use, ideally Wanamaker spend £200 hence why I have suggested second hand.

Any advice guys??

Thanks so much

£200 is a small budget for what you have in mind, the camera body only could be as much as £200 then you'll need suitable lenes for wildlife, which should be at least a 75 mm to 300mm zoom that alone will be around £200, depending on the make of camera you buy

I suggest you pop alone to a local camera shop, see what they have 2nd hand

Or maybe opt for a bridge camera which has a decent zoom - which most have, only drawback is, it will be a fixed lens, but still good enough for what you need

Oh and welcome to the forum

Les :D

Hi and welcome to the forum :).

Photography, particularly anything to do with DSLR is expensive and you will need to reconsider your budget :(. Unfortunately £200 isn't going to go very far and will only allow you to look at the bottom end of the 2nd hand market at best.

As already mentioned, your best bet is to go to one of the mainstream stores such as Jacobs or Jessops and speak to the staff there. They will give you some idea of what your budget will stretch to.

Sorry I can't be any more positive but it is what it is.

Well I was happy to go to £400 if I have too so it looks like that will be the case, hey Ho.

Thanks for the help

So do you have a preference over canon or nikon?

They both make excellent cameras. The important thing is to choose one that suits you. This is why visiting a shop and handling before you buy is so important.

I hate to do this.. but i wouldnt go celebrating yet.. that 400 will get you a low end camera and a low end lens that will only be any good in good daylight used at 300mm for wildlife..

to give you some idea... if money wasnt a problem you would be looking at around 10 thousand pounds for one camera body and one lens to get good consistant wildlife images in most situations...if you get the bug then you will be spending a lot more money on photogrpahy believe me :)

however at 400 you can make a start so not doom and gloom. just saying dont think your there :) You then need memory cards, bag, monopod or tripod and all manner of bits

as for nikon/canon .. just try both and go for whatever takes your fancy.. one isnt better than the other :)

photography isn't expensive in general. but wildlife/ any sports is hugely ! I wouldn't even start with anything less than canon 60d + 70-200mm f4 . and that is over 1000 pounds I think.

That's great advice Ta, well everyone needs to start somewhere. I already have a dsl like camera, with a fixed lens. Thanks again

What do *** think of a canon 350D with 18-55mm?? Considering all of the above.

Thanks

lol. looks like y.o.u. is a banned word :D

it's allright - that combo - but unfortunately not so much for wildlife . I think 55-250mm lens is really good. but 350d + that lens = only when the light is very good and the subject not moving about too much.

18-55mm is(as in IS image stabilisation + try to get the newer kit lens if possible, the one that came with 350d originally isn't too good) is really good but 55mm will only be good if the creature is standing next to you.

So I could buy that one with that lens then also buy a one more suitable for wildlife, what one would you suggest??

Thanks
