Good choice. I had the 7d with 70-200f4 for a while and it worked okay...but having the 2.8 is much better. Look forward to seeing some shots!

+1 for the Canon 7D and non IS 70-200mm. The Canon 1.4 TC work very well with this combo.

ISO 800! More like ISO3200! Go as high as you need. I often find I'm struggling at 1/500th and ISO3200. I usually shoot jpg to help with burst multi-shots. Post your results.
Echoing what Carol said, Dartford's ground, while it's a great ground and has quite decent floodlights, I had to shoot at 6400 and averaged around 1/640th so I know how Carol feels now.

Hi Philduncan,
I've just upgraded from a 50d to a 7d and use it for non-league football combined with a sigma 70-200 f2.8.
If you can afford the 7d you wont be disappointed.
I shoot at iso6400 or even 12800 if its really dark but that allows 1/500-1/640 shutter speeds and produces less noise than you may think.
I find i get much better results this way than shooting at lower iso's and then trying to "push" the images in PP.
FYI i shot in mRaw which produces a Raw image of around 10mb but critically allows the 7d to shoot continuously at 8fps without filling the buffer.
Here are a couple of examples shot a week ago on a gloomy and very dark tuesday night at Hemel Hempstead Town FC.

As mentioned by earlier posters, i wouldnt consider an f4 lens for night time football, you will really struggle to get anything usable with an f4 at 1/500-1/640 shutter speeds.
