my friend has advised Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

anything else?

My s2pro.. and a nikon 50mm 1.8 (the best and cheapest nikon prime lens, awesome for gigs) or a sigma 18-125 (very good lens for all round use but cheap as chips.

Well if you want photos like the top two, you'd be better equipping yourself with Photoshop ;)

The camera you mention is a good one, but I'd recommend getting a Nikon D40 or other similar low-end dSLR. The quality is so much better, and you have (almost) unlimited expansion options in the way of lenses, external flashguns etc.

Most of the end result is with the skill of the photographer, but a basic dSLR will have you equipped with everything you need to get going, upgrading as you need to along the way.

Cheers,
James

DSLR and some great lenses would do the trick, check for some second hand ones that normally go fairly cheap but remain in good quality

Ive heard canon are better for noise (not trying to start any kind of argument) which might be better for gigs and live shows

You could get the set up i mentioned for less than your budget ;)

The fuji s2 pro is nikon based too so you'd be able to use a lot of great lenses (i do at the moment) and accessories as time goes on. Check dpreview for a review:

and all these would be good for gigs?? im just wondering how i'd get them in, they look pretty big!

The camera wont take pictures like that for you. The quality in the second set of shots you posted are down to the photographer.

For ultimate control a DSLR is the way to go. As you mentioned that they are too big then you should consider the Olympus e-410. This is a small DSLR with many advanced features built in.

A bridge camera (like the Powershot IS) in my opinion is a wasted investment.

Good luck.

King.

the canon is pretty small. In fact if you had large pockets you could get the canon body in one and the 50mm in the other. It's a very small combination in dslr terms, in fact not far off the size of the S5

What he says... :)

I have an Olympus E-400 and an Olympus E-510 (the 410's big bro!) and I luv 'em.

Shout if you want further advice on these cameras, us Oly owners are the minority around here - chillimonster and I are on a mission to swing the scales and to convince others to see the light...

:D

although i have just bought a Canon 30D off these very forums as i want to go W---I---D---E and its just too exmensive on Oly. The 7-14mm lens is over £1000, and for that i managed to get a 30d and a 10-20mm lens and still have enough change for the wife to buy another pair of shoes :bonk:

... and is probably the only reason you were allowed to obtain another Camera eh:)

You seem to be shopping more for post processing skills and photography knowledge than a new camera really.
Grab a copy of the GIMP (which is free) and learn to use it.
Photoshop is quite an overkill for a beginner.
Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop Elements would probably do the job for you as well, should you decide you want more than the GIMP can offer.

You might want to work on some basics as well.
Have a look at this list of nice links I have put together here:

Check out my post from 08/29/2007 @545 there and dig in.

Of course, a camera with a full manual mode and aperture and shutter speed priority modes would be a good tool to get you going.

how did you change the contrast of the photo?? I've just fiddled with gimp but I can't find anything... hmm
