Hey all,

I've been asked by one of the coaches of a local under 10's football league about the possibility of me shooting the games etc.
I've said I'll think about it and if I'm interested I'll come up with a proposal. Now, I've never shot this type of thing before. I'm used to photographing children as I have covered a few events in the past where I work (in a school) but never football

First off, my equipment. I have the following;

Nikon d90
Sigma 18-50 f2.8
Sigma 70-200 f2.8
Nikon 50mm f1.8

I think that the lenses I have would be ok as I'd use the 70-200 for the games and then the 18-50 for the team shots. Do you think the d90 would be good enough?

Now onto the business side of things, I'd love to be able to print onsite but this just isn't going to happen. I just don't have the cash to get the equipment etc. So I would be going down the route of handing out flyers to parents with the website on and taking orders online. Not sure if I'd use a company to host the images, take the payment and full fill the order or do it myself. I can design and implement a website no problem

The club obviously want something out of this as they are desperately trying to raise funds. So I'd be thinking of a percentage of the profits from all sales. No more than 20%.

Now I understand that this could be hit and miss as to wether it's worth my time but I think that it may be worth It in the long run if only for the experience.

I think your kit is fine, as for the pictures I would be getting them printed at photo box or somewhere similar and doubling the price of a print if it's an enlargement or even for example 14p for a 7x5 I would sell it for £5 you have to make it worth your while. Think how much you have spent on your camera kit?

That's very true, I'm looking at who to use to fulfill the orders at the minute.

Photobox is good but it looks like its costs a bit and I've heard things about the quality.

Imagepartner seems good but their ordering website is a bit naff

Yeh the only thing about dscl is that id have to manage all the sales and send the order to them. I'd prefer to pay a little extra and have it all automated

Well after having a think about it Ive decided that if this goes ahead Im going to sell fulfill. I cant see there being tones of order anyway so the least people to take money out of my profits the better.

I think I have my pricing structure sorted but not sure if im offering too many products . .

I have a meeting tonight with the managers and people involved etc so does anyone have any tips for questions that may pop up or things i need to make them aware of etc?

Is it a tournament. or are you shooting a single game ?

if it's a tournament then I'd consider teaming up with an event photographer who does print on site in order to maximise the takings.

If it's just a game or two then I think you need to look at it more as a fun shoot rather than a money maker as I don't think sales will be worth your time.

No its just a u10's sunday league type affair. They have never had a tog down there (pheraps theres a reason for that).

The idea was that I'd shoot all the teams (think there's 9) every now and again and then go down when there were special tourneys or events on

Your offering will IMHO have a big effect on your sales.

If you can value-add, by producing personalised photos with names on, magazine cover type images etc then you stand a reasonable chance of making some money.

If you're just shooting - forgive the expression - bog standard shots then I don't think the quantity is there for a decent return.

You need to try it though - go for it.

ok, went along to the meeting last night which was very positive.
There are 9 teams in total and they play on Sunday mornings. Their home matches are literally 2 minutes from my house.

I have agreed to give them 15% of my profits and also let them have a few photos for the season program but with credit and a link to my website.

Ive said I'll shoot 2 or 3 games at different times over a month or two and then evaluate it to see if its actually worth doing, as if im not making any money then theres no point in it.

Will shoot my first game in a few weeks so i have until then to get my website and flyers together ..

Just two questions. Do people use paypal to sell their images online? If you do have you just setup a normal paypal account or a special business one?

TIA

If your taking payments by card and not from paypal accounts you need to have a premium account, its still free just can take payments direct from credit cards.
