Hello

I have a chance to purchase a mid sized beauty dish (55cm) well used but comes with a head for a good price, would anyone have any shots using something like this?

From a quick bit of research they seem to be used mainly for head shots and are a hard light with soft edges and give a funky catch light.

Current lighting set up is 4x hotshoe flashes and 1 small 180w/s studio head. 2x 24" softboxes, 2x 33" shoot thru and reflective umbrella's

Would i be able to create a similar sort of light using any of the above?

Also is 55cm big enough for a Beauty dish? I see most tend to be 70cm

Edit: What situation would you want a Beauty dish over a softbox/umbrella/bare light etc, Still just messing about wth lighting and feeling my way as i go but prefer not to buy stuff i wont need.

Cheers Neil

I'm not a fan of beauty dishes, but that's just me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, not the dish, especially a small one. Light is similar to a small silver brolly, but you can position a BD closer.

Looking at what you've got, I would say you need a big softbox/octabox 100cm at least.

I have a 70cm and 41cm dish, love them, they would be the last modifier I would get rid of. I prefere them with grids. I would grid everything if I could, its all about control.

almost all my shots in my modelmayhem port are beauty dish and some of the lastest kid photos on my other site.
