Continuous focus needs BBF button held in or it won't be continuous, e.g. with following a flying bird ... in theory single focus doesn't involve the subject moving so there is no need to hold it in. Also you may acquire focus on a subject, lock focus by releasing the BBF and recompose the shot to a more appealing composition but with the subject remaining in focus.

What Gramps has said.

Just to expand a little, using BBF you shouldn't really need to use the single shot AF mode as once you have achieved focus you release the button, if you want continuous hold it in. I can't remember the last time I switched to single shot mode

Simon, are you saying that if your setting is CF but you dont hold the button in and just take a shot there is more chance of missing focus as apposed to having the setting mode as single shot mode? If yes why do you think this would be if you are only shooting the once.,do you think the CF setting alogorythms make it more jumpy?

I get what you are saying.just set to CF and if singke shot wanted dont hold in but if CF wanted hold in but with this option it saves having to keep changing modes right?
What do you think revSimons issue?

With BBF & a very wide aperture I get slightly more focus misses using C-AF than S-AF with my 85mm f1.8G on my D750. Your mileage may vary..
A wide aperture will of course give a very narrow depth of field, therefore using C-AF will allow for much greater impact from a slight movement in focus point position.

Ah,i think i misunderstood,Simon didnt mean he had the problem shooting singke shots in CF i ssume but rather problems in using Cf continuously not giving as many in focus shots as doing it with single shot, wether in CF or SS mode
