Looking back today and digging out some old gear, whilst clearing a room at home.
I came across my old Canon 350D, which I'd given to my daughter a few years ago. Apart from her initial enthusiasm, she lost interest and the 350 sat, forgotten in the bottom of her wardrobe, in a bag. I came across it today and couldn't resist firing it up. I was astounded to see one bar on the battery, it hasn't been charged for over a year now. I put it on charge, it took about 2 hours to regain full charge. I put it in the camera, got full bars battery wise and I fired off a few shots. I've just checked it again, it's still showing full bars, after all that time dormant. Here's the killer, I got my 350 in 2005, it was my first DSLR and only ever had one battery for it and it's still going. It's an 18 year old battery, that in its early life, was used heavily.
I then thought about when I had a 7D. I had the grip for it and 3 batteries in total. I still have 2 of those and they are going strong, they were new in 2012. I've since sold my 7D but kept 2 of the batteries.
My 5Div, same battery (as the 7D), just a newer version with slightly more capacity, bought in 2017, still going strong. I use both the original 7D batteries and the 5Div battery in my 5Div now, to this day. According to the battery state in camera, they are one bar each but I haven't noticed any drop off and the same charging times now as when new. Infact, My R7 battery is the same and is practically brand new, a newer version too but I don't see any difference in performance or battery life from full charge, or charging times.
Those battery state meters in camera, makes you think, doesn't it?
