I turned on my calculator to be greeted with a message telling me that my batteries needed to be replaced.
I bought the 4xAAA required and opened the compartment to find that one of the existing batteries had leaked and caused corrosion to a terminal.
Fortunately only minor damage had been caused to the conacts and it was easily cleaned up.
This is the fourth episode of battery leakage I have experienced in the last year.
Two were clocks where the batteries are there for long periods of time. The other one was an external battery pack for a camera to give extra shooting time.
The sad thing to report is that in each case the batteries were Duracell 'Gold Tops'. Advertised as 'The Best' and sold at a premium price on the back of that.

Send them off to Duracell, it could be very useful for them to see, maybe a manufacture issue.

Yes, that's very unusual for any decent batteries. Where did you buy them? Lots of fake Duracells about :(

Over the past 20 years or so the only batteries which have leaked for me have been Duracell, bought from many different sources but never Ebay.

I've pretty much given up on alkaline batteries in favour of 'low self discharge' rechargeables. Ikea have some cheap ones they call LADDA, made in Japan with (reportedly) the same technology as Eneloop Pro. Alkalines are just too unpredictable. I found a leaking alkaline a while back in a remote control that was somehow still working.

Yes that’s what I use too they are excellent
There’s no point in buying batteries that are not rechargeable

I am not sure if it is still the case but there used to be a lot of Duracell forgeries around a few years back, as above i only use rechargable batteries now as they are so good now.

I shifted all my AA and AAA batteries to Eneloop. When you couple them with a good charger and charge slowly they will last you a long time.
