Hi,
Whilst I'm fully clued up on taking my camera and it's battery through check in (as hand luggage).
I'm not sure what the rules are regarding the flash.
Do I put the batteries in it just in case they ask me to switch it on to show that it works? or not?
Thanks.

I would put batteries in anything that you are taking with you, just in case, as you say, they ask you to show it working. They can see from the X-ray that a device has batteries in or not, and so I imagine, ask random people to switch things on, or especially if a device doesn't look right.

I got asked to empty my bag on my last trip because all the wires and cables must have looked odd in the bag against the laptop and cameras.

Best in the devices anyway, then you know you have definitely taken them. ;)

Just returned from holiday with mine (flew from Manchester) and they made you take out any large electrical item of hand luggage and put the individual items in the tray including lenses and flash units - didn't have to show working
