Yes
I have several speedlites (600EX-RT and the Yongnuo knock-offs) and they're chewing through batteries so I wouldn't want options I had. Do the external battery packs remove the need to have the speedlites loaded with batteries or do they only improve the recycle time in conjunction with the internal batteries?

I'm not so much looking for faster recycle time but more to last a full day without having to change batteries every hour.

Any good options people can recommend?

The Panasonic Eneloop batteries get good reviews, i use them in my Youngnuo flash and have done events lasting a few hours without the need to replace them. I bought mine from here
and i also use this charger

I have probably 20 eneloop batteries (including those ones) but they still seem to get chewed through. I was hoping there were some high-capacity external packs that were good and reasonably priced.

Options:

- Large capacity rechargeable AAs, like Eneloop Pro 2450mAh.
- Assuming all your guns have an external power socket, then a cheapo battery box that takes a pile of AAs.
- Best option is a rechargeable Li-on battery pack, like this Lencarta http://www.lencarta.com/studio-ligh...tom-power-pack-for-atom-portable-location-kit It's made by Godox and available under numerous brand names. Can power two guns at once

Does the Lencarta (I was looking at a Cheetah but think they're the same thing!) actually replace the need for internal batteries? Some of the descriptions I've read said that the speedlite still needs it's internal power source and these packs just help with recycle time.

Just a question, Does the yn600's still exhibit battery drain when not in use.? I know my ST-E3 does.! Maybe that's an added factor, Just a thought.?

I don't think so but I always fully charge everything before going out so not really checked that!

Cheetah is likely the same, but from the US. Put 'flash battery pack' into the Amazon/ebay search bar and all sorts of options will come up.

I don't think the pack is too fussed about an internal power source, it's just a glorified battery after all, but the flash unit may well be. I think some need a set of batteries installed, but have the option to bypass it in use. Check the flash handbook.

Sorry - Actually I have been using the 2900 mAh version not the 2500. I've been using these in 550's, 580's and 600 EX flashes and the battery pack I mentioned earlier and they fit perfectly with no difference to a standard AA in size. I wonder why the batch you have are physically larger?

These are the ones I use: https://www.7dayshop.com/products/7...tteries-2900mah-16-pack-4x4-7DAYAA29004CASEX4
Yep thats the ones, they fit the YN 560111's ok but I also had a Godox that they were just too tight to get in, the are just a little bit thicker than the 2500's

Just checked them, they are approx 25thou thicker, could just be a difference in the plastic cover.

Short answer is that you need batteries inside the flash to power the flash functions. The 600 EXRT has two options. Use both internal and external batteries for recycling the flash or just use the external pack.

I use the Calumet external lithium battery pack for my flashes and have no complaints about them. (They are probably rebranded from elsewhere I think)
