I have a number of .jpg images of varying sizes and dimensions that I would like to reduce to 800px wide in order to upload to a gallery.
CS5 has a 'batch' facility but it seems that I have to stipulate width and height ... which will distort the images.
Is there any other way that I can batch process all of these individually sized images to an 800px width (other than 1 by 1!)?

TIA

Faststone image resizer - simple to use and it's free

CS5 does it quite easily. You just have to select the option to set the max dimension to 800. For a portrait image it will set the height to 800 and on a landscape the width to 800 and automatically adjust the other dimension to suit.

I do recommend Fastsone but there is another way in CS5

Instead of batch use the scripts and Image processor. You may have to download this from adobe as it may not be a standard installation (I can't remember)

When the image processor dialogue box opens, follow the steps of where and what quality you want to save them at etc but also, there is a dimensions box. This has a width and height entry box. If you select both to 800px, it will only change the long edge to 800px and therefore NOT skew your images.

Here is a little video to show you how.

Eazy thumbnails is ideal for this and quick and better still free.

Don't think some of the CS solutions are any use for he OP who wants to resize everything to 800 wide?

I agree with you there but because I know the correct way to do it, I have enlightened the whole thread with the procedure to succeed!

Thanks Tom, had to give that a try and it worked perfectly - I had assumed that it would distort the images but all were fine

Thanks to all who gave useful advice.
