I took 200 photos at a 50th party on Saturday night.... weedled out 106 keepers.
Like a twit I saved them in tiff like I always do for storage purposes, now I need to convert them all to 300dpi jpgs for sending off for printing.

Is there any batch convert software (free!) you know of to convert 300dpi tiffs, to 300 dpi jpgs?

Thanks

Janice

Assuming you've got Photoshop Janice, you could just record an action for the conversion, then run that action as a batch conversion. If you need a bit more info how to do it let me know

Thanks Grendel. I would like to try it myself first, so I learn by my mistakes.

If I can't manage I will give you a shout. Thank you!

Janice coincidently I just did exactly the same with my first use of actions - took 171 shots of my lads 21st party from Tiff to 800 pixel wide Jpgs using two actions: one to resize and one to save for web. Surprisingly easy even for a duffer like me!

Ran for about 1 minute each. Happy to help if needed!

You don't even need an action. There is a function in CS2 to do this for you.

Select the file menu, then Scripts, then "Image Processor".

Select your folder full of images to process (it does all the images in one folder, so put the 'keepers' in their own folder). Select your options (destination folder, destination file type).
You can also add a presaved action to run here too, if you so wish (like a bordering of some sort).

Dead easy :)

Thanks John. Actually its not for the web I want to save them.

I want to save them at 300 dpi large files to send off for printing.

I guess will just have to create an action to save as jpg and thats all.

Although when you do it on the first one to create the action..... then when you do the others as a batch...will it save them as their own file numbers but with jpg extensions instead?
and can i state the output folder...i dont want them mixed up with the tiffs.

I tried that and couldnt get it to do what I wanted, Marcel.

Give Bibble a go on free trial Janice- http://www.bibblelabs.com/. Its still my go-to programme when i need to batch quickly and without fuss. It's also really simply laid out and intuitive.

im worried that if i do a free trial i will end up with logos stamped all over them! LOL

let me get home later on and see what I can find. I suppose i shouldnt have saved in tiff really but I find that a safer way because of the lossless format.

I tried a few ways this morning and lots of them put them as jpgs but only 72dpi.

i notice in the image process in PSCS2 link.....it just says "jpg....size of image...and quality..." but not if it keeps them at 300dpi.

LOL - its safe from what i remember ;)

 Don't trust him Janice, he said that about his dogs on Saturday night and I'm still trying to get the hairs out of my TPF fleece

The batch processing does allow you to select a different output folder so they won't all get mixed up.

If you want a 6x4 at 300ppi that is 1800px x 1200px.

Save as that.

Multiply the axis' of the image by 300 to work out the number of pixels you require that should be enough to send them for printing.

Who do you use to print?

I use photobox online and they are excellent.

Yep...that's where they are going...but i cant 106 send huge tiffs it will take about 2 weeks to send them!
I have saved the tiffs as 12x8 at 300dpi. So if I change to jpegs i will need to save as 3600 x 2400?? is that correct?

Oh dear deja vu kicking in here....hope Robert doesnt see this !!!:D

If you're keeping the dpi the same then the pixel count won't change. But by saving as JPEG the file sizes will me much smaller

What you did to excite the dogs is between you and them

Yes, but how do i stipulate that I want to keep it at 300dpi?

the image processor will create a jpg folder (or tif folder or psd folder)automatically when you save them to any folder. So saving to the folder your tifs are in will still be fine. Honest!!

They should be resized at the same res. In the boxes make the quality 10 and uncheck the resize to fit. You could also check the resize to fit if you have to do it again with larger files and the max size of both axis should be whatever the biggest pixel side is (in this case 3600px which is 12" at 300ppi).

When I suggested uploading I meant as jpegs (not tif files) :) the jpg should be a fairly small file in comparison. 12x8 is a big print. Are you printing them all this size?

Good luck - It's pretty quick and easy and you will not alter your images by doing this.

.

Thank you. No Im printing most at 6X4 but there will be some at 12x8.

Perhaps i will make them all 6x4 size then if she wants a few bigger ones. i can just convert those few from my tiffs later.

pHOTOBX say the file only needs to be about 3mb or so. My tiffs are about 23mb each!! LOL

Check the "resize to fit" box and fill both w and h boxes with the 1800px number. this ensures the max width is 1800px for a landscape format image and the max height will be 1800 px for a portrait format image.

You can convert your tifs later using a very simple action to make a jpg @ 3600 x 2400 (12" x 8" @ 300ppi).

Are your tifs 16bit?!! I'd make them 8bit and you should see a big file size reduction.

Do not send TIFs to photobox though. Your jgpg files will be smaller.

Or it may be that you have not compressed the tif. When being asked, check LZW compression. This is a lossless compression and will not affect the IQ. But it will reduce the file size significantly.

Ah now i always save with no compression. in case i have to print a big 30X20 or something. I thought no compression would keep it at its very best.

With a tif it doesn't matter :)

Open them all and save with LZW compression. That will make a BIG difference.

Remember TIF files are compressed with a lossless compression (you do not lose quality). that's one of the big advantages over jpg.

Just reaching for the 'back' button now....

Ha ha! Sorry Robert!

Although actually, I agree with what you said before now I have read all this!
We wont go into what it was, just to say that I agree! ;)

I am now the proud owner of 106 1800x1200 jpgs in their separate folder, all ready for sending to photobox!

Thanks for your help all. (but EOSJD, in one post you said uncheck the resize to fit box,,, and in another you said check it! )
I left it unchecked and they all seem ok.

Glad you got there in the end

PMSL  What are you like :D

So how did you do it in the end? (You may have already said, but it's late and I'm devoid of coffee)

I did it in photoshop File/scripts/image processor. and made them 1800x1200 jpgs. 6x4 in other words.

Im more than happy...so thanks everyone.!

In the first I said check it because I thought you wanted different sized files from the ones you had saved. So by checking the box it will resize the images.

Say you want all your images from a wedding at 800 pixels on the longest edge to give on a CD for proofs. You check the "resize to fit" box and insert 800 into both boxes. You will then get a folder with all your images saved at the appropriate quality setting (normally lowish for a proof) and at 800 pixels on the longest edge.

Now say you have a folder of Tifs that you want saved to jpg at the same size, you would then set the quality and leave the resize unchecked. this will give you the same sized images.

Sorry for any confusion and glad you got there in the end.

Cheers
Jim

Just remember 1800 x 1200 isn't really 6x4. It's only a 6x4 @300ppi. It's also 12x8 @150ppi and can be any other size you care to mention :)

Yes...Ive finally got that into my thick skull...after all this time!! Thanks for you help! :)

Good Janice. Glad another has learned. It really is pretty simple though once you get to grips isn't it.

Go and preach the word..... :)

I will go and have a chat to Robert about it!! LOL :D
