Both start in September.. Anyone covering any? I will be doing Manchester Magic again for the Basketball.. Some Ice hockey at Blackburn but only 20 minutes for the paper... Ice hockey is over 2 hrs on top of a long day then too many pics that because of the conditions need a fair bit of PP. Thus limited time on it this season. Hopefully doing some top level IH as well this season.

I'll be doing basketball again, and hopefully BBL. Dont you do any BBL Tony?

And what is top level IH??

Phil.

DOH just got it ICE HOCKEY....... haha

Not really.. nearest one is everton then chester for the cheshire ones.. I may try a cheshirte if I am already ion the area..

But you really can do anything wiht the pics, your not allowed to sell to general public or use for anything other than news... everton is no good as i checked all local papers.. not interested

BTW my BB at manchester will be limited to what games I can get to not clashing wiht paid work.. or away games wiht stanley.. so intend to get to some not all.. and put less online.. just the best shots rather than loads of ordinary.. no one interested in buying..

I will do some BBL but not as much as last year.....I will also do a little ladies EBL.

I won't be doing any ice hockey this year unless sent to cover any.

BBL have just lowered PLI to 1m.....initially it was going to be 5m for this season.

that clears up why my licence app says 1m and phils says 5m :)

my first bb of season next sat manchester v leeds.. you there phil?

I'll do a bit of BBL as Guildford Heat are just down the road. Haven't made a penny from it so far but it's cool to watch and be at. Can't really be bothered with ice hockey - used to play it and it's much more fun to play than take pics of.

Ice hockey is the last of an 8 job weekend so i am just doing the first 20 minutes then home... Paper will only use one.. 2 at the very most pics...usually one..

That should save my another £20 :D

Im supposed to be at a paintball game on that Saturday, but I should be there for the tip. (Magic v Leeds) Looks like it will be a nerve racked game with magic looking to build a squad :(

I have been asked to cover a Ice Hockey match tomorrow, never done it before, would welcome some advice...:)

Depends on what advice you need.. shots, settings? Have you done any indoor sports before? whats the arena and what gear will you be using?

Settings I should be able to work out myself, more on how close I really will be, I have a place on the bench but because I know nothing about the Sport dont know how close that will be.
I will take 24-70,300,70-200, all 2.8.
It will be at Sheffield rink and I have never shot indoor Sports before.

If you can do the settings and your on the bench you have cracked it to be honest.. I ahvent done sheffield but I believe its one of the better lit ones.. certainly better than mine.. You will be right next to the action.. so close your better with a hard hat and dont lean over the barrier... 70-200 will be perfect.. you will have the best position in the arena for photogrpahy...

Thanks Kipax, I am quite looking forward to it, spose it will be a bit chilly too!!

isnt it funny how you forget the most obvious things... yeagh i wouldnt reccomend going in a tee shirt... but you dont need wooly hat and gloves either :)

The lighting didn't used to be too bad. I always shot through the plexi iso 3200, f2.8 with shutter speeds between 1/250 & 1/800.

My lens of choice was a 300mm 2.8 with the 70-200 2.8 on a 2nd body.

As Kipax has said you're in the best seat but just watch your front teeth.....that puck flies at some speed. ;)

TBH, behind the plexi would be my choice too
Have been told it is well scratched now though, I should be there early enough so will have a look around.
How long does a match last?

I never shoot through plexi.. its disgusting at blackburn anyways... Prefer behind the bench with a mid range prime or furthur back in seats with a 300mm.. the extra legth gives the visual effect that your actually lower down..

Just to finish my bit of this topic off.
Went and things didnt quite work how I wanted, was not allowed on the bench due to insurance reasons, plexi was terrible so no chance there, not much chance of shooting from the stand, there is a netting up that goes from top of plexi to the ceiling!

There was a work bench near one of the bench's that enabled me to just about (on tip toes) to get my camera over the plexi but under the netting, still not ideal.

For the second period I got hold of a tool box to stand on on top of the bench, was comfy from there on but wasnt ideal.

Going again Saturday when hopefully insurance will not be a problem.

Some pics on the link below.

Ice Sheffield has three levels of lighting. Low, competition and show level. Hardly ever get show lighting unless cameras are there. Competition level is ok and I usually shoot at 250/f2.8/ISO 2000.At ice level its bloody cold although up in the seating area it is often warmer.

You can shoot over the Plexiglas on one side as it is slightly lower but you will have to stand and may be in the way of spectators.

Not sure what level of lighting was on when I've shot at Ice Sheffield but as I say it wasn't too bad.

Look up at the lights. If not all on its lower level. If all on its competition and if the additional (very bright) suppliment lights are on its show level. Never had these on but I believe they are very bright. Best lighting at ice rinks I've ever experienced was at NIC (Nottingham). Get them all on and it fantastic. Unfortunately I rarely go there these days.
