Basic off camera flash question

Recently got hold of a 430EXII and am using it with my Canon 600D. I want to use the flash off camera to bounce of a wall and diffuse the light and am using the on board flash to trigger the 430ex wirelessly. Am I right in assuming when doing this, the flash will only use ETTL mode? If so, am I also correct in thinking I can use flash compensation to increase or lower the power of the flash?

Or is there anyway of using the flash wirelessly (triggered via the on camera flash) not in ETTL mode?

Thanks

E-TTL is the control system, you can use it in either auto or manual, but the slave flash must always be in E-TTL to receive master signals. Yes, you can use flash exposure compensation. It's all in the camera's flash menu.

You don't need to use the flash off camera to bounce?
