Basic lighting kit

Hi everyone,
Could anyone recommend a good and preferably, reasonably priced, lighting kit for portraiture.
There is so much on the market, its so confusing. Is it better to have cont. light or flash?

It's better to have flash for portraiture, but what's your definition of "reasonably priced"? That will have an effect on any advice you get...
 
one big thing you need is budget. if you have a £300 budget then get a flash set-up or if you have a good £1000 then you can by a studio lighting kit. budget makes all the difference.
 
As Flash in the Pan says, forget about continuous lighting. See this article, which may help you to understand what's important.

There are quite a few studio kits available at around your budget, but you need to be careful - the 'Ebay specials' are never as good as they claim to be and it's much safer to stick to the better brands. You might want to look at the new Lencarta SmartFlash 200 kit, which is only £325
 
the interfit ex150 kit is supposed to be not too bad, or perhaps invest in one decent light to get you started. try to find someone else after a studio light and buy a set between you

Currently i have 2 430EXIIs and a 580EXII I was thinking about selling both the 430s and using the money towards a flash head kit I do like the look of the SmartFlash Starter Kit.
Would you think this is a good plan, I'm after a bit more umph then the 430s can give, the only thing with the Lancarta set is that it only has umbrellas and a softbox is adding more to the pot so to speak.

You can either add softboxes (or any other light shaping tools) later or you can get the Lencarta SmartFlash 200 with softboxes instead of umbrellas. If you get a softbox kit the price is of course higher, but only by the difference in cost between the umbrellas and the softboxes.

I did have a look and its a bit more & by the looks of it you still get 1 umbrella too which is handy, I'm just umming and arring about selling my 430s and getting that kit.

Its not very heavy to lug about so think it would be good, I have also got my first gig lined up for the next couple of weeks [friend wants some portfolio shots for her hairdressing].
 
garry, am i right in thinking the 200w studio lights would overpower the 580ex11 making the flashguns useless as extra lights?

No, not really. They are about 4x the real power of the speedlights but can be turned down, they are adjustable from full to 1/16th power.
