I have a file with two layers. I want part of the bottom layer to show through, so I guess I need to make part of the top layer (semi)transparent. I haven't the foggiest how to do this. Could someone please tell me how?

I am really struggling with this editing malarky. It is not helped by the fact that the program's help files were not installed with the rest of it. The website reliably informs me that if this is the case, they need to be installed separately, but doesn't give me any indication of whereabouts in the mess of files and folders I might find the 'install help files' icon. I have looked but to no avail. If someone could point me in the rigt direction I'd appreciate it.

If I`m understanding the problem correctly, you need to cut the layer you want to be partly transparent and paste it onto the bottom layer. You can then use the eraser tool to remove bits of the top layer, flattem and save.
Hope this helps.

ok bear with me it has been a long day and im now working nights soooo if I dont make sense thats why :)

Im sure there are many ways but the easist I can see is have both layers visible ( with the eye showing in the layers tab )

then select the Eraser function and you have to activate an alpha layer which you do:

Layer > transparency > add alpha channel

then when you erase you will get the background layer showing and not white
to make the eraser bigger/smaller use the [ or ] buttons.
