well here is my first of probably many asks for advice..
am doing a bit of a photo session with my band at rehersal on monday night. the pics will hopefully be used for a bit of promo material if they are good enough.... he says hopefully!!!..... all ill have with me is the nikon 3100 and kit lens. room is lit with those inset little circular lights in celing.
Any tips on how to get the best results with this would be greatly appreciated.

up the ISO until you can get some nice frozen action
raw plus JPG is nice, so you can test shot in B&W and then keep the colour too
I would zoom in and capture snippets and details of what's going on.
unless they all kick off and focus around a point it's hard to get a decent rehearsal image i think.
if they do start playing and show casing for where the crowd would be, then you could give them a point to focus their movement on. but normally studio rehearsals are pretty un-exciting from this POV I think.
do you not have an off camera flash at all?
you could get a mini diffuser for your in-built flash..which is literally just a dome of crepe paper or something similar

thanks matt.... also the room isnt the biggest and we are a 5 peice... but there is space to move about,, and have been thinking of getting some quirky angels.. standing on a chair, through the drum kit etc.. as im guitarist as well will need to pass the camera to one of the lads to take a few of me..
no off camera flash.. will only be the built in flash and kit lens 18-55mm.

Depending on the type of music you play.. Avoid the on camera flash, it will look awfull! If you are a rocky/metal band, up the ISO to as high as you need, and then convert to B&W to get some nice gritty shots, even if the light is terrible you can still usually salvage something.

Most of these were lit with a table lamp, apart from one which was a tiny club with one spot light.
Taken in 2006 when I didnt really know what I was doing lol

Of course if the band is a jazz band, this style wont work at all!.

hi tom.
like those pics. no, were not metal... more indie rock. ok so up the iso seems to be the key. so... again maybe a daft question but should i choose app priority or shutter? or neither?.... bearing in mind i will need to had the camera over to one of the lads for my moment/s in front of it?

Have you got a tripod and a release cable ? or at least a self timer on a tripod ? that might help if you need a real slow shutter or a self portrait
Also look for light in the place and use it, i took some shots a while back in a rehersal place of a local guitarist and the only place well lit was where bands store stuff, so we went down there plus try and maybe include the location as well if you want IE

no tripod yet.. on the to buy list. the camera does have a self timer though.. may have to improvise with a chair or summut if i use it.. the place is pretty smart inside for rehersal rooms... no sticky carpets etc.. although outside is a bit more 'urban' may try a group shot outside the doors using the self timer with camera on a car roof or summut.. very heath robinson i know but as no tri pod.. no choice.

well tonight is the night.. band rehersal and photo shoot withe me as snapper!! many thanks for the advice given, if anyone else has any words of wisdom then please feel free to enlighten me.
