Badminton - where to start?

Hi folks,

I got into badminton last Christmas and am kind of enjoying it but have no idea on the kind of racket I need to buy. To describe my fitness, I'm a former basketball hoodie but obviously due to age I don't have the leap to dunk anymore. Lets just say I'm fitter than most but can definitely do better. I can do smashes but not like jumping jack flash.

So, where do I start with rackets and what brands are good? Some sports shops are having some massive discounts and thought it might be time to get into the sport. I'm looking at Carlton, Yonex, Head and Spalding and my budget is around £5-$15 (after discounts so used to be £10-£40). Some examples :

- Carlton A B IsoTI Badminton Racket
- Yonex B600DF Badminton Racket
- Carlton P B 4000 Badminton Racket

What about shuttercocks? Are plastic sufficient or do I need to buy the proper ones?

Lastly, any body playing regularly during the week within London? If not I might start a group.

Thanks!

Shuttlecocks

I played years ago but no way am I fit to now. If you're only playing recreationally then any half decent racquet will do you, get down to a sports shop and try some on for weight and balance as it's that more than anything else that will govern how well you get on with it.

You might be better off posting on a slightly more "sport" related forum? :D

Having said that, we are predominently a UK based crowd, so brands and stores etc (not to mention prices) will be different for us....

I played a few times when I was in my late teens, enjoyed it but not enough to continue...

Can't help you specifically on your queries though, sorry:)

What do you mean UK based crowd? you mean like you're all over the UK and not just London? Throw me a line matey!

Yeah I thought I'd try my luck here as there might be some photographers shooting badminton photos or something. I have tried it before and was blardy hard.

LOL sorry my fault - I saw the $$ sign in your original post and presumed you're in the US (there's no location on your user profile on the left)....

Have you got a local club or something you could speak to the people there, or the coach? Maybe they could recommend something?

you won't go far wrong with Yonex or Carlton. If you can stretch the budget a bit look at something with a carbon shaft. They tend to be lighter, give better feel but still allow you to get the power.

For shuttlecocks plastic are fine for club nights. They're durable and reasonably priced. Feathers are great but you can go through a lot in an evening.

visit the badminton england site for local clubs but to be honest you wont get much racket for 15 quid, as with anything including photography you get what you pay for but carbon or composite rackets are more desirable that metal but you wont go far wrong with carlton or yonex however, lightness and flexibility are also desirable factors.

No worries, yeah I typed $ instead of £.

Yeah looking around but still new to the place. I just need some advice on rackets and stuff and hopefully the sport is popular enough to find regular games.

Thanks mate, that's what I was looking for. Never heard of Carlton and think I'm not worthy of the carbon shaft rackets (probably cost a bomb too).

Ta mate, this sports store is having a massive discount so £40 are now £15, reckon this is a good deal.

BTW nice Myspace page.
