Hi all,
What is your preferred backup software? I use file history on win 10 but discovered it had stopped backing up about a year ago!! It’s working again now but I thought I’d use something more reliable so downloaded Macrium Reflect - looks good but complicated for a simpleton like me- I did a backup to an external drive with all the default settings but I honestly wouldn’t know what to do if PC blew up!
Is it easy to do a full restore and would it be exactly the same?
Opinions please !

I use an iMac so use the provided Time Machine which works very well and seamlessly. When I had a hard drive failure last year, it was no problem to reinstate my programs and photos.

I've used Acronis True Image for years, it's never let me down.

Macrium or Acronis for full system backup, cloning drives, etc.

To back up / synchronise files alone (eg on external storage) using various protocols, Microsoft SyncToy runs fine on Win10 32 or 64 bit -

A more sophisticated alternative that I like is SyncBackSE.

As above.
Not that that helps you much.

Another Acronis user here, works well, intuitive and has worked for me several times after a 'disaster'.

For windows, just use the built in windows backup and run it on a schedule. For Mac use Time Machine.

Another file history user here.

Never had a problem with it and it's restored two failed hard drives.

Note the spelling is correct, this is what my backup software is called: Bvckup 2

You can find it here: https://www.bvckup2.com/

It can back up in the background, either real-time or scheduled, and you can opt to backup manually. If you plug a USB external drive (either a thumb drive or an external HDD), it will automatically remember this drive, even if the drive letter is being taken up by another drive. You can try it for a couple of weeks, then it's a one off payment of approximately $20 (approximately £20) and after that, that's it. I've had mine for maybe about 3 years and so far, never had any problems with it.

I set it up like this...

My Workflow folders (split into three folders, Stage I, Stage II, and Stage III) will be backed up every half hour. This is were most of my files that are currently WIP are located. Stage I is usually for incoming files (ie: downloaded from Internet or transferred from camera) so acting like an In-Tray, Stage II is on-going work, Stage III is kind of an Out Tray, where files will be moved to Archives or wherever they're going when done.

My user files, mostly like my personal files, bookmarks, and so on, is backed up every 6 hours as they rarely get changed.

My iTunes Library gets its own backup folder, and is backed up every 6 hours, half hour after the above one.

Archives. Those are the folders that very, very, rarely get changed. They're just where finished files ends up, photographs, finished documents, etc., files get moved from Stage III to Archives. I don't use a timer and let it run in the background. No point because they rarely change unless I moved finished files to there, in which case, knowing I did move some, I would manually back it up.

I have the above back up files set to back up to an external HDD always plugged into the comptuer. But I also have the above files set up to be backed up to a secondary external HDD which I only plug into the computer every week or two, for the purpose of backing up the back up, and for off site.

Time Machine here :) no problems at all, many a time have deleted or overwritten a file by mistake, it takes seconds to get it back.

I just back up files and photos to ms one drive plus use some external HD’s as a extra security measure. I see no point for someone like myself to back up windows or programs as I can simply reinstall in the event of a system failure.

I used Acronis and noticed it wasn't backing everything up. Seemed unreliable for me. I ended up getting a refund from them
Possibly not configured correctly as it works great.
