Yes
I currently don't properly backup my computer at all (!) but am now looking into it :)

I have a MacBook with a 60gb HDD, and run Aperture.

My current idea is this:
- 80gb external HDD to mirror the MB
- Add external HDDs as i need more space

Does this seem sensible? what do you do? :)

i bought an external and just copied all the files and folders i want to keep onto it, seems to be ok!

My workflow includes my photography backup.

I sort all my shots into folders, one folder for each shoot.

So the other days raw files will be in 10.14 Prestwich Clough Woodland Walk

In there are the RAW files. When theres enough, I backup these folders to DVD and delete them (obviously after processing the shots).

On my photography HD I have 4 main folders

- 01.Working
- 02.Processed
- 03.Backup TIFFS
- 04.Web

I convert from RAW to 16 bit TIFF, which goes in the 01.Working folder. I then open it in PS and immediately save a copy as a separate 16 bit TIFF to 03.Backup TIFFS.
I then process the original file, with adjustment layers etc. And keeping it layered, saved it, and move it to 02.Processed (after running a script and saving a web version to 04.Web).

When there's enough I copy both the processed folders and the backup TIFF folders to DVD, and delete them from my HD.

So I have all three stages backed up onto DVD, so I can always get a decent copy of a shot back, should 2 of the 3 discs fail.

Yes

I would get a firewire drive something like the lacie's and use a program called superduper, it will back up your entire drive to the firewire drive and make it bootable. Then every week or whenever run superduper in smart mode and it will make the backup the same as the origional in a fraction of the time as most of the data will be unchanged.

I use this to back up my quad it has 2 250gb drives in it and i just back them up to a 500gb fire wire drive, it came in very handy 2 weeks ago as my main board in the quad went faulty trashing the drives.

I only lost a few days work nothing to worry about, so when the quad came back from Apple after £ 900 of repairs (under warranty). I just hooked up the firewire backup and booted from that and restored the back up.

Saved me a lot of work.

For my pics i have seperate auto rebuild raid storage (a new project of mine).

I also recommend apple care as those repairs can be mega on a mac.

cheers

Mark

RAID 1 here.

And USB back up drive that i keep incase of fire. ;)

that's something a lot of people don't think about. i'd like to have a back up hdd to leave at a mates house, infact i think i shall get one just for photos.

You're welcome to dump it here, if you're short of somewhere ;)
I may well do the same when I'm feeling a little more flush!

Do you find any time to take photos too?? ;) :D

I'm going to buy another external HD for my own stuff. Currently using a USB 250gb Freecom Classic SL and since I've had no problems with it, will be getting the 400Gb version on payday - this has a network socket, so eventually I intend to be running two 400Gb drives that'll stay at home, with the 250 as the 'deployable' part of the system.

I'll be getting at least one Lacie Brick drive next week so i can sort this out :)

The off site backup thing is also very important and always overlooked, so i'll have to think about that as well!

I have my USB drive now! I haven't done much but copied stuff over and move my Aperture library. I need to think about the rest really :)

It does look cool though! It's like a bright red big lego/duplo brick :D

Right, just a quick update on this. I've not sorted a proper system for photos yet but this is what i've done so far...
- Partitioned the drive in two
- One partition is an exact mirror of my MacBook HDD and will probably be updated each week
- The other partition has my Aperture library and other files, and may contain MacBook drive images that are not updated
- I partitioned it because i can then easily boot from the MB mirror one, which is cool (i just tried it, and you just press alt for the boot menu when starting the Mac, and it appears there)

I now plan to get another USB HDD and use it to keep a mirror of this one

I have a USB drive, but I need to get a new hard drive and have a proper backup. I currently ocasionally backup to DVD, but if I had 2 large HD's, I'd have a synchronised folder on one with the others contents :D
