Im going on holiday for a couple of weeks and will be takiing 2 cameras with me, my ixus (SDHC), and my 40 or 50D (CF). I only have a few GB for each camera (1x8GB card for the ixus) and 1x4GB and 1x1GB card for the SLR).

So I'm going to need/want to make backups of images while out there (for backup purposes and also for storage/space reasons).

I don't think purchasing a specific backup device would be wise as I won't be using it again I don't think. I don't have a laptop either.

I was thinking possibly a cheap netbook with an external USB HD?

Or maybe a cheaper option?

I recently bought a used Acer One for this reason. 120gb storage which will be way more than enough for storage. Actually got it through here, but had a strict budget in mind and stuck to it.

take ixus and leave xxD at home ;D

if you want to take xxD with you get 8gb CF and ahoot jpg :)
you will be fine:)

Me personally its the netbook\laptop route. Now I have a camera bag that can carry my lappy, storage is never an issue again.

In your situation, you can get a nice small netbook. Get one with a decent sized hard drive and you wont need the external drive, save pennies.

As-per ^^^, get a few more cards, or:

If possble, perhaps uploading them to a server or the likes of PhotoBucket from an internet caff could be one solution?

Buy a super cheap netbook from somewhere like cex - use it for 10 days - trade it back in. Effectively just end up renting said netbook for about £50 depending on how much its worth. Obviously, if you wanted to take a macbook pro or something along those lines, expect the "rent" to be much higher.

I do it quite often with things I only need for a few days, like an external HDD to temporarily back up files on, or P&S cameras. Then either take them back to CEX or flog them on ebay.

Better yet, befriend someone in CEX, staff are allowed to buy items and return them for a full refund within 14 days :D

I'd deffinetly get a netbook, they're cheap enough and it suits you for backup. Might be worthwhile getting more memory cards too as if you use the netbook to backup I presume you will still be leaving the shots on the original card too.....and 4gb sandisk extreme 3`s are nice and cheap too......£24 at Picstop (thats actually more than I was thinking but hey).

Hi Bud! Give J a ring, he told me about something or other that you could use (RIGHT over my head!!) He also has a netbook, but it's not got very large storage!

Netbook and card reader. And more cards. Don't forget that it's a family holiday and that then kid(?s) would probably like Daddy to spend as much time with them as he does behind his camera (as might Mrs Marcel!).

A Netbook is also handy should you find yourself somewhere with free wi-fi and want/need to check e-mails or here. You can even put PSE or similar on it and upload any really special images to Flickr etc just in case you lose everything.

On top of backing everything up onto the Netbook and keeping as much as possible on cards as well. I use a 16 gig USB key as an extra backup - OK, I may be being way too cautious BUT, I'm unlikely to lose all the copies!

I have a little Acer Aspire that I use for this purpose - it's perfect, small form factor, lightweight, cheap, decent sized HD, and a built-in card reader. Bought it second hand for £130 and I just stick in the back of the rucksack. Useful also for viewing images whilst still on holiday and for checking email, surfing web etc.

if u want a cheap laptop carphone warehouse do them cheap thats who i work for check them out online and they where doing a cheap compaq really cheap think it was about 179 dont no if they do it now

Will do, cheers.
I've been offered the loan of a netbook by Jimmy_Lemon, so that's another option open to me. (Will naturally take card readers).

I think I need to invest in a couple more CF cards anyway just incase (for the SLR). Maybe a spare SDHC for the Ixus.

I'm definitely taking both cameras. The ixus is for family snaps and movie stuff. The SLR is so I can do *some* togging while out there :)

I have a 4gb SDHC here if you want to borrow it! Not using it hardly!

I agree with getting more CF cards but I also like to take another device to back the cards up. In the past I have used a Vosonic VP8360 (mine, unfortunately, doesn't read SDHC cards but I imagine that newer ones will) but for the next trip I too will be going down the netbook route.

Do you guys know something I don't about the security of images saved on your card (CF or SD)?

I'm off on my hold too soon and was only thinking about having a handful of SDHC cards. Wasn't anticipating an additional 'back-up' device. Is it generally advisable?

If I do go this route it'd probably be using my netbook. Anyone know of any good RAW conversion software I can download free onto my netbook for viewing backed up images whilst away from home?

I'm with AndrewC - I am willing to lend you a CF card or two (probably about 20GB or so ... )
They wont be particularly quick, but they work in my 40D/50D.

Pm me if required.

Software try Google Picasa or UFRaw for Gimp

You're all just chuffingly too kind  Too kind indeed!

Pete, it's not necessarily about backing them up (well it is actually), but its mostly about space, and not having all my eggs in one basket. Anything can happen really and this is our only family holiday for many many years to come probably so quite a rare thing, and I don't want to jeapordise the photos :)
