I posted a thread a while back about a 1 light setup I was hoping to buy soon. Someone has just offered to get it as my Christmas gift but the only thing stopping me is the background.

With one light, would I be better having no background (well, an "environmental" one) or a black or grey background? I understand white would need lit separately to be photographed as white and, with black, you're looking for distance between the subject and background and avoiding light hitting it at all? It's been a while since I was in the studio so I'm not sure if I'm remembering that right!

Stepping outside of the usual, I have a few large rolls of paper (quite thin, about 90-100gsm) that I'd quite like to try.. they're patterned and coloured. I'm guessing the use of them would be similar to white - they need lit separately?

(looking at portraits if it helps!)

Thanks in advance :)
