Background colour advice

hi

was wondering what colour or design youve all found works best for portrait photography?

and also what material is best to use?

and one last thing.....wheres best to buy from? i dont have much of a budget, it needs to be at least 10ft wide and at least 16ft long

To date I only use white paper - it comes in rolls 9ft x 35ft for about £40

I get mine from studio kit direct, and it's called 'Super White'

For me, paper is better than fabric as I want clean backgrounds and no fuss over smoothing them out in PP - there is a whole range of colours too, but it's easy enough to add filters to your flash to make a white background a different colour, so I think it's most versatile

Cloth backgrounds 10x16ft would be very expensive

I agree with what DD says on the paper rolls, I think its white all the way these days and you can always buy some gels for colour if you want that.
One thing to keep in mind though with the paper rolls, is if youre planning to 'go mobile',
you may find them a bit difficult to transport around (rooff rack?) and so this is where the old creased muslins come in to their own, or for single portraits, the Hilite, as I have.
 
hmmm yeh i do need it to be mobile

can the paper not be rolled? and id be able to make a spare one if its 35 ft long....just cut it in 2 :woot:
 
I'd make sure that I had both black & white backdrops as I too find them most used.
With time constraints as DD mentioned - post processing creases out of a fabric backdrop would be impractical but fabric backdrops are much easier to transport imo.
