"Back" button in Windows explorer

Why does my "back" button not work in Windows explorer? (XP)

When I open a yelllow folder, then another within that etc etc, to find something, I used to be able to click the blue "back" arrow, in the top left corner to go back a level.

Its all greyed out now and I have to close each folder instead.
 
Is each folder opening in a new window?
 
ah i think i may have answered my own question......wait a moment!!

sorted.//...folder options, open in the same window!! LOL

I am very good at technology, seeing as how I never used a computer at school or college, or work. never had a lesson or course on anything.
but I sort out all our 3 computers at home.

And do all the tv/satellite wiring round the house.

Jonny....Im sure you know I can do it, but you are just winding me up!

I am more than capable....but am just a bit impatient and cack-handed at times....hence the sensor.
