I took a photo using a custom setting on my D300, but when I used Adobe bridge to import it into my computer, it turns back into colour (and without the custom settings)

Any ideas on whats happening?

I'm going to guess that you shot in raw? A raw file is just that and it retains all the information in spite of the in camera settings. What you see on the LCD is the embedded jpg which will conform to the in camera settings

Oh man, adobe help and support, eat your heart out.

That was great info. Yeah, I shot in raw. So I presume the only way to get the settings back (i.e. contrast, brightness) is to edit it in my software?

Yep, you'll have to do your own conversion. That said, I aways felt I got better B&W conversions in software rather than letting the camera do it and it's much more fun trying out the different styles yourself. Mind you, if you are shooting with B&W in mind, it's quite a good idea to set your camera to B&W as it gives you an idea of what you want to achieve, if that makes sense.

You sir, may have shaved off a few years towards shooting awesome photos for me (which may be decades away).
But still, thats some pretty solid advice.

Cheers!

The only way to preserve the b/w file from the camera is to use Capture NX/NX2 to do your processing, either of those will recognise that the images were shot in b/w

Or extract the embedded jpegs (which are black and white) try instant jpeg from raw (free)

shoot jpg and raw, then when you are editing your raw file you have a baseline to compare it to. manually converting to B+W is the way to go, far better results can be achieved.
