Hi
I recently did some portraits for a DJ friend and she has asked me about printing a particular image that she and her father love and I need some recommendation on where to go to get it printed.

It's a B&W image (or should I say grayscale?!) and she wants it pretty large, at least A3 I believe, possibly bigger.

I've been looking at the Peak Imaging website and wonder which paper should I select? (If anyone has another recommendations for printers I they would be welcome)

I've seen a couple of threads mentioning getting a colour cast on B&W images, I obviously want to avoid this.

Also, probably a very basic question but, is there a limit to how big the image can go? It was shot with a Nikon D40 which is 6.1mp, focus on the image is good.

Thanks!

Ilford do good black and white prints. If I was you I would check them out.

Ilford are very good indeed, but very expensive.

Many on here use DS Colour Labs who are significantly cheaper. I've also used Photobox who are very good. Colour casts are generally only an issue if you are printing on an inkjet printer in my experience, and most labs don't. I could be wrong on that point though.

As for sizes, that's all very subjective. I've printed A3 from a Nikon D70 which is also 6mp and they look good. Not sure I'd print any bigger than that, however, it depends on the viewing distance. If the picture is going on a wall above some furniture where you can't get up close to it, then you might get away with printing bigger. Due to their prices, I'd be tempted to try a couple of larger sizes from DS Colour labs to see how they fare at say A2 or A3.

In terms of paper, if you are putting it in a glass frame, you might want to consider a matt or lustre paper.

Thanks for the options Andy. I'll take a look. I gave my friend an indication of the price from Ilfords and she didn't have a fit so it might be ok :)

At the risk of sounding like I'm pimping them out (just wrote about them in another thread...) The Print Space may be an option. They are expensive (looking at around £20 for A3/18x12), however they have the option of "old fashioned" light sensitive paper which I should hope don't have any colour cast. I've had two B&Ws printed so far on the Matt version and they show no colour casts.
