If I have a colour image that I wish to convert to B&W, hows best to do it? from my limited knowledge I know of 3 ways, these are within the RAW software, change to Black and White, within Photoshop select de-saturate, or within Photoshop select the chanel mixer in monocrome format. With the third one I am not sure how to best set the source channels.

Any help would be appreicated.

Thanks

Rob

Photoshop channel mixer is the best and most versatile method. The default setting is 100% red channel, change this to 0 and start at 100% green channel (with a tick in the monochrome box obviously). Then play with the slides until you get a result you're happy with. No hard fast rules other than it's best to try and make sure the value of the 3 channels doesn't exceed 100%, although I've pushed this up sometimes and got very pleasing results.

This is a useful site to have a look at Rob, it gives a brief run down on the most popular methods of b/w conversion. HTH :)
