Awful Picture

Good thread idea and a potentially interesting one, but I don't think you're allowed to post other people's pics in threads, only your own

don't see how since thats where the people are standing - its a clear photo of the two captains.

Eh? Have I missed something? Looks like a pretty standard sports reportage photo?

The guy behind the cup ...

And what exactly was the photographer supposed to do about that??? I don't really see the point of this thread, we are not talking about landscape photography, where hours, day's, weeks or even years can be spent waiting for that day of perfect light etc, or wedding photography with posed and set up photos or a plan for photo's local how they're going to work who is going to be in them etc, we are talking about photo journalism where you capture what is infront of you at the time it happens  clearly in this case the interest is the cup and two captains it's unfortunate that the 3rd person is there but cest la vie

I've been in the "10 second window" of events like the above on 2 occasions, both were basically all arms and elbows and you don't get choice on what you can or cannot do. you just fire away and truely hope for the best that one of them has no crap in the background.

my example was shooting Tyson Gay's world record a few years back in Manchester, I got him looking down my lens, with his time on the board and some **** was hanging over the barrier in the background like a tool spoiling the shot. But I had no control over it so it was sent anyway.

I don't think you're allowed to slate photos when the photographer isn't on here to defend themselves either.

I'm not the OP, I'm just pointing out why he may think it's terrible.

Move to the left/right? use a longer lens and shoot from further back to blow him out more? Shout at the guy to GTFO of frame? :D

most of the time you don't get that luxury though, you are in a pen and have to basically deal with what you get.

Well, most of us know this. Again, I didn't make the thread, in fact I'm in agreement with whoever said it's not worthy of a thread.

Guess all we need here (as part of constructive criticism) is Jocky's wisdom on what he would have done to get a better shot in same circumstances?

My god how sensitive can you all get!

There is a picture with a guys head replaced by a trophy. Does no one else find that in the least bit amusing??

I am not a pro photographer but I have a fairly stressful job BUT I still manage to maintain a sense of humour. A skill that seems to be absent from some of the people responding to this thread.

I give up.

Sounds to me like you are the sensitive one from your response?

I always maintain a sense of humour and I was smiling as I wrote my comment. I have a stressful job too if that helps?

My job is stressful, and if I didn't have a sense of humour it would kill me...

i've done plenty of press conferences.. what you dont see in the photo is all the other photographers elbowing each other and packed in like sardines.. the guy probably stood there for a few hours thinking that he's got the best position and then when the trophy was raised the guy in the background spoiled the shot.
You could say its lack of experience, or bad luck.. You could also say the team in charge or PR messed it up.
Sometimes you would get a photographer shout at them and ask them to do it again, but depends on the circumstances.

I wonder if you really could do better than that? You might have turned up and not even been able to get close to the stage, or had to shoot from the side. just sayin
