Basically i'm big into spotting at Manchester Airport and taking photos of the Aircraft there. Now i currently have a Fuji S1500 which i use which seems fine for taking pictures of bikes and cars etc, but i find it quite difficult to get shots of moving Aircraft with it.

Heres a pictue taken with the fuji

Just wondering would it be better for me to get a DSLR for this kinda stuff and keep the Fuji for basic stuff like Holidays etc or anyway i could improve wit the fuji.

Cheers

Marc

I don't know anything about your fuji but there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get the whole plane in, assuming your at normal safe distances. Are you using the viewfinder? it'll make it much easier to track moving objects compared to using the screen.

Just a little tip for the photo above - you may want to look at the exposure as pretty much the whole of the plane is blown out.

Yeah was using the viewfinder as i find it much easier than using the live view/lcd screen.

The ISO was set at 64 as it was really sunny with the sun behind me and the camera had set the Aperture to f4.0 Couldn't get it to track the plane with auto focus as it was quite laggy when pressing the button.

Your problem may be down to a "feature" of the type of camera you have. In P&S and Bridge cameras there is a small time delay between pressing the shutter release and the pic being taken.
If the subject is moving it will not be in the same place when the pic gets taken as it was when you pressed the shutter.
DSLR's take the pic virtually the same instant that the shutter is pressed.

So id be pretty much better off using a DSLR for this type of stuff then?

Hi All my first post, please be gentle

I have a Panasonic DMC FZ28 - wonderful camera in most respects well satisfied with it for MOST of what I used it for......

..expect Aviation photography the freeze after each photo almost made it impossible to pan fast jets with any great accuracy. I ended up with lots of noses & tails & very few complete a/c.

So I've just bought a Canon 450D -my first DSLR & it was my first outing yesterday photographing the arrivals for Waddington air show - I can't tell you how much easier I find it, I was really impressed with my first time efforts.

I mean i got the Fuji because i didn't really fancy lugging a DSLR everywhere, but for Aviation i will be in the car or bike so it can go in the boot etc.

Don't want to spend a Huge amount ***, probably £500 max and to include a suitable lens for Aviation. Would something like a Sony Alpha 230 with a 300 mm lens be sufficient? Or a Canon 1000d with twin lens kit?

Oh and Mayfly do you still use your Panasonic, or predominantly the Canon now?

I think you may be better off with the flexibility of a zoom. Something that covers 70 - 300mm or thereabouts.
I know nothing about the cameras you mention, but the brands have good names.

If you don't get advice in this forum try asking in the Transport forum. Plenty aviation types in there.

If you get a DSLR I will not be surprise to find that it soon becomes your camera of choice.

I use the 450D but I have only had it for 2 weeks so it's still a new toy :)- To be perfectly honest I think it will turn into a case of going out to take photos it will be the Canon - for walks where I take the camera along it be the Panasonic, simply because it's light to carry & easy to use - as I said above for me the Panasonic was brill but for the freezing when continuous shooting

I think my main problem is i don't have enough experience in photography just yet and could do with some inspiration and learn the basics before commiting myself to a DSLR.

I got te Fuji in January this year and have used it probably 3/4 times, mainly due to lack of inspiration really.

I have seen some impressive pics by people with compact cameras.
