What a fascinating website, albeit rather unsettling. For those who aren't aware, the website details reports of incidents and crashes of various public, private and military aircraft from around the globe. It's striking when you realise just how many in-flight problems occur on a daily basis. Wonder if we will ever see the modern jumbo-jet replaced with a safer alternative? :cuckoo:

Great link. There's some really interesting reading in there. I looked up Leeds as that's my nearest airport and I work on the incoming flight path so easily dropped on. Not funny for the person involved but my favourite was an emergency when a champagne bottle fell out of a locker hitting someone on the head.

I watched the tail end of "Terror in the skies" on the box last night, disturbing.

The programme was basically arguing (rightly or wrongly) that automation can hinder instead of help, and also pointed out that most pilots today weren't trained as military pilots and, by implication, don't have the skills and experience of older pilots.

Other factors such as tiredness and poor working conditions were also mentioned.

I've done a lot of flying, have never had any sort of problem and know absolutely nothing about it. All that I do know is that, statistically, air travel is extremely safe.

Garry, I will have to check that out! Sounds interesting. What channel was it on?

I just can't believe the amount of incidents reported via AVHerald. It seems air travel is not as safe as we like to think... I feel as if we live in a false sense of security when it comes to flying!

That honestly couldn't be further from the truth. Look at how many incidents are reported on Avherald per day and look at the number of flights that happen around the world, an average number of daily reports is 5-6, Heathrow alone has over 1200 movements per day. Of the hundreds of thousands of flights that take place all over the world 5-6 incidents per day really isn't a lot.

Also some of the things reported may sound bad but in aviation terms they're often non-events. Rejected takeoff, asymmetric flaps, lightning strike, etc, are all very much non-threatening to the overall safety of the aircraft. Even shutting an engine down in flight isn't that big a problem!
