The 400mm f/5.6 wouldn't on a 7D with a Canon 1.4 TC, believe it does on some Kenko TC's though

No. AF switches off on a 7D above f/5.6.
You can try and fool it by taping the pins, so it will still try to focus, but that doesn't make the diameter of the aperture any larger as seen by the system, so it won't be as good. On some cameras it works acceptably, others not at all.
Live view AF shouldn't be affected in the same way, but probably not practical.
