I have a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 prime lens which I've always loved. The auto focus has gone out on it though (always a little soft) and its not a problem with the focal point, it genuinely is just off on the focus.

Anyone know a way of correcting this? I use a Nikon d800 and d300s in case that makes a difference

Cheers

Paul

The AF correction adjustments are for AF accuracy, but if the lens is soft even when focused precisely, then the lens is faulty.

Have you only noticed since getting the D800? Maybe you're just seeing the limits of the lens with the higher resolution?

Which lens is it? D or G? I have both, and both are excellent. The G is noticeably sharper at wider apertures.

Here's a D800 shot with the Nikkor 50mm f1.8D (unedited).

The 1.8G is even sharper than that.

If yours is not as sharp as this after careful checking of manual focus with Live View, then there's something wrong with it.

I'm not really sure I understand what you're trying to say. Is it a case that the point that you have focussed on isn't sharp but it's sharp somewhere else (maybe quite close to the focal point)?

If that's the issue then both the D800 and D300s have AF fine tune which can be used to correct the offset. The camera manuals will explain how to actually do the correction.

If it's something else then maybe an example image would help :)

edit: must learn to type faster :D

and its not a problem with the focal point, it genuinely is just off on the focus.

This leads me to believe that even when focused as sharp as possible, it's still soft.. i.e, it never gets as sharp as he thinks it should.

Hi. Thanks for the replies. It is on both the d300 and d800 so not a resolution issue so its sounding like a fault for sure. It's not a focal point issue, the focus is just off (even with small apertures).
I'm using the 1.8D which are not pricy so may not be worth taking it in for repair?

Have just checked again and definitely worse on the D800 so maybe it is a resolution issue? Perhaps needs to invest in a replacement to go with the new d800
