I've made some beginner mistakes, I've used a DSLR with buil-in mike, not good but I've now ordered 2 external mikes, which should fix that problem.
I've also had to use a cheap camcorder as a second camera, that one doesn't have the option to use an external mike, and the sound is poor.
I've found a really good solution, everyone else on here probably already knows it but in case you don't . . .
The improvement is enormous!. In future I'll use that preset for all of the camcorder sound and, if necessary, will create a different profile for the DSLR sound.
