I'm looking for a small computer for my young lad. He's only four but already adept at navigating on my laptop and surfing the net for Top Gear, so I can't see the point of getting a VTech or similar toy computer.

Thought a netbook would do the job and saw this one. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/asus-eee-pc-1001ha-04310849-pdt.html. Looks Ok to me. What do you think?

I guess I will also need an external DVD for loading programmes from disks. And would it be OK for watching films on DVD's?

Thanks

Gary

That's a good price, the competition are all about the £240 mark. It should play videos quite well but I think you can put in an extra 1gb of memory (£30) which will make it run better.

I have an Acer Aspire One D250, which I picked up for £200. I replaced the 1GB memory module with a 2GB one, so it's running with 2GB of RAM. There's been a noticeable improvement in performance.

iPlayer works fine in both full screen and windowed, so I would imagine DVDs are ok - that's not a promise though.

Spotted this Asus eeepc 1001P at Play.com for £210, it's basically the same machine but with the new N450 processor (better performance, longer battery life) and Win7 starter edition.

No external drive, I just either use a shared optical drive on a network or copy the install files to a memory stick and install from there, I have an eeePC 901, its great for occasional browsing and other stuff but not typing the keys are way too small, I did try the 10" ones but there wasnt really the improvement I wanted so decided to go for the one that will fit in the glovebox in the car and get the 9" with SSD.

I'd be more inclined to by a cheap laptop, larger screen & built in DVD drive for not much more :)
