I've just come back from tonights shoot and the camera has been playing up. Whatever setting(s) i have it on, SLOW SHUTTER SPEED. It stays open for too long and is given me nice blury pictures. Tried different F numbers, Tried different ISO. Everything.

It is a Canon 400D (see what lens(2) i have in my sig) I think it is a problem with them

Any idea what i am doing wrong guys?

Tony

The easiest thing to do is bung up an exif of one of the duff images if you can, and give us something to go on. ;)

Thanks CT, I'll get on that

How do i make sure the exif stays with it while it upload it?

Here you go CT

Shutter Priority

1/200th sec @ F4. No choccy biscuit TG. :D

I was riding along and trying to sort out what was going wrong with the camera, so i thought i had fixed it and took a shot, not what i wanted to take a photo of

Really? What is it meant to be? :runaway:

No seriously, for stuff like that what is it meant to be?

1/200th of a second? And it was on shutter priority so should have been easy enough to change. I'm confused!

What settings would i need to take stuff like that then? :help:

You only really need shutter priority for fast moving things like sport.

because youve chosen a fast shutter spped in reasonably low light the camera will then not be able to offer a suitable f stop to cope with it-so you get dark blurred images.

for a stagnant image in low light should have had the iso set high at say 800 and an f stop fairly open but enough to get the f dop you want.

Does this make sense to you

Well think about it. You set a shutter speed of 1/200th of a second which is a bit optimistic by the look of that light, and I'd imagine your aperture has opened up to the maximum of f4, and it can't go any further - result under-exposure!

If you'd used AV and a large aperture, the camera would have a set a much slower shutter speed in that light, and you'd have got a much better exposure. The only thing is you might have been down below safe hand holding speed so it might have called for a tripod, but that's to be expected with these night shots.

Try shooting in AV for a while. :)

or you can set the magic pixies loose on it........

In AV, i have noticed that if you point it into lighten bits it is fine. but once you go into a dark bit it is much slower opening and closing the shutter. Guess that is what it is meant to do

Yup, you've told it the aperture & it decides the shutter speed for you

less light -> slower shutter

That's exactly what it's meant to do.

If DOF field is important, e.g. landscape, then you choose a smaller aperture, but all the while keeping an eye on the shutter speed in the viewfinder. Is it handholdable? If not - tripod.

If shutter speed is the most important, e.g. action shots, opening up the aperture will give you the fastest shutter speed and the shallower DOF, which is often what you want anyway, to isolate the subject from the background.

CT, your a legend

I now know what i was doing wrong, how i can fix it

Most of my shots this week, will be handheld untill i can get my hands on a tripod
