Are the Canon 5D Mk1's any good?

In short, yes.

Ideal for portraits, probably the "industry standard" for portrait togs several years ago.

I had 2 before moving to Nikon, just make sure you source a tidy example.

They do produce lovely images, worth noting that it will feel very sluggish in operation compared to your 7D.

Certainly are good, use mine all the time now after selling my 7D

Bit prone to sensor/viewfinder dust, but the end result is excellent and enjoy the simplicity of using it. File sizes aren't too big either and 8gb card gives about 400 RAW and jpegs.

Mirror lock up is buried in the menu so got mine saved on the one custom setting along with a few other favourites.

The later ones with a serial number beginning with two are supposed to have a better LCD. Not seen an earlier one to compare, but that seems to be the general consensus of users, battery lasts for ages too.

Not had the mirror fix done on mine, getting on for 20,000 clicks and alls well although I believe it's still available free from Canon

If you want peace of mind MPB usually have them in, 6 months warranty and the option to return.

I really like the 5d, nearly bought one recently (again!) and saw a really nice one in Harrison cameras for £425 with a years warranty.

I got a great deal on a Sony A77 but will happily buy a 5d if I can't get on with the sony. Add an 85/1.8 and you have a brilliant bit of kit for portraits...
