......in to doing up cars?

I've just started getting ideas to do my car up and was wondering if anyone else has done it?

If so, post a picture :)

Tony

I do it for a living. Its harder than it sounds to do it properly...

Actually I restore cars - not "do them up" which could be anything from restoration to customisation.

I bought an MG ZR bout 7 years ago as a project car. I did not do anything to the outside but it had a 7" Wide Screen TV in the dash. DVD player, TV receiver, full 5.1 Dolby Surround, 12" Woofer in the custom boot build (which i did myself with the help of Auto Acoustics) all run through a couple of big amps. Was a great project. Scary though, as i only had the car for 2 weeks and i ripped the whole interior out to fit all the kit!

This is my project car.

1977 Lancia Montecarlo.

Stripped to bare bones - rebuilt with ultra light fibreglass & aluminium panels. I estimate its been lightened by about 150kgs (even after the 30kg roll cage has been fitted)

Engine, brakes and suspension have been highly modified - but rather than just bolting on big things - I've done all the maths to make sure its gonna work - overbored, high compression pistons, big valves, lightened flywheel, lightened and balanced rods...

I've even ripped out the entire dashboard and made myself a new one from scratch.

No hifi !

Will be used for track use.

Next job is to make myself a new inlet manifold because the ones I can buy won't give me what I want. Then I have to design and make new alternator mountings because the twin carbs will be in the way... Every mod has a consequence with other components - example - I didn't like the standard oil filter mounting as it was cast iron and weighed 5kgs because some cars had air conditioning and the same bracket held the a/c compressor, so I'm having to redesign the whole oil filtration system with a remote filter and a special oil take off pipe.

Headlamps are also used on Pagani Zonda.

Final mod will be full Martini race livery. Then it can be used on track and road whilst I start speccing up the 2nd engine for it - 16v head, supercharged & fuel injected.

 I'm not a boy racer :D

I am going to get a little car that needs work doing to it then do it up to how it is meant to be then sell it :)

You won't make money that way. Unless you have a 1930's Bugatti or a Ferrari GTO, it will cost more money to repair it than the market will accept as a selling price. All these garages who buy a car, restore it and sell it are cutting corners somewhere.

However, learning to do some of your own servicing - changing brake pads, bleeding brakes, oil changes and things like that will save quite a lot of money and knowing your way around the car will help if something goes wrong.

It is "Barry"..................:D

Always been into cars.. ideally I would have an Escort Mk1/2, Mini, or something along those lines. Bought a new leon (see sig) with the intention of not having to do anything to it but I still make little changes here and there :D

Although I think you guys are too small scale.. you have to think big when you are doing something up..

I've restored a few old Land Rovers in my (between 1958 and 1965). Easiest things to work on.
