It's been an emotional time for me recently, both my parents dying in the space of 4 days, and laying them to rest last week in Italy, they left me a substantial amount of money, which in the whole scheme of things means absolutely nothing to me right now, but i do need to get away in the coming months for a couple of weeks and i've had an idea.

I've always fancied taking my camera to Iceland and i'm also a lover of cruises, so i thought why not combine the 2 and go on an arctic cruise, which will hopefully take in Iceland as well.

Anyone ever been on an arctic cruise?

No never but always fancied it or an Antarctic one. Seeing whales and icebergs and various wildlife/weather I think would be great. Have to be a comfy cabin and a decent bar on board the cruise ship though obviously! Good luck with sorting one.

We "did" the South of Iceland in March '15 (with the TP group) and found it pretty expensive but well worth the effort and cost. Some friends went earlier this year and prices seem to have at least doubled (as far as accommodation etc. goes) and that has put a return visit out of the frame for us. However, a cruise would take the major costs out of the equation (as well a car hire!) so could well be the cheaper way to do it now.

At some point we plan on doing the Hurtigruten ferry up the West coast of Norway (and back down to Bergen) rather than a full blown cruise.

Went to the Antarctic some years ago and the whole thing was a truly amazing experience. It can be frightfully expensive but a real once in a lifetime thing. Ours was a Russian icebreaker, not to big, plenty of landings, great food, a proper adventure. I can highly recommend it.
Very sorry for your loss, it must have been a horrible time.

Thank you it's a very traumatic time.

Looking at the prices i couldn't justify going on an Antarctic (south pole) cruise, as much as i would love too, i was thinking more Iceland, maybe Scandinavia.

Also pricey, but I've heard such good things about them, are cruises originating in Vancouver, and heading north to Alaska.

I must admit mine was a freebie

We did one of these cruises earlier this year for my wife's 60th birthday. It was fabulous, the scenery is amazing.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Both my cats died within 4 days earlier this year, and I found that hard enough, so I can barely imagine what it must be like if it's your parents rather than your cats.

With regards to your cruise idea though: I'm not sure I'd put 'arctic' and Iceland in the same frame. Iceland isn't arctic. I mean, sure, it's quite northerly, but to me 'arctic' means snow and sea ice and icebergs and polar bears and stuff like that, and you won't really see much of that around Iceland. It has great scenery, and in winter it's wintery, but for icebergs and polar bears you need to go further north. (Or further west, to Canada, where the continental climate means it's colder at any given latitude.)

Thanks, it's not easy.

Maybe Nordic or Scandinavian?

Sorry for your loss but yes just go for it
