appture setting landscape?

Read one article which stated to go for maximum depth of field so such as f36. But then another article said around f12 anything higher would make the picture to look soft? (something to do with the way the light bounces)

Bit confused as to where roughly the appture should be?
 
Between F8-F16,any higher & you can get other problems.:thumbs:

Just to double check my understanding if i went below f8 the background would become blurred?
 
you need to read up on hyperfocal distance if you want the background sharp all the way.
 
It depends on the lens/camera combination (Google "dof table"). With a wide lens f11-13 can achieve hyperfocus from a few feet into the scene.

But landscapes don't have to be wide or sharp from front to back.
 
I have had quite a read and hoping i am understanding this correct if someone could confirm or correct me i would be grateful

lets say i have used the hyper focal chart with the following values.

f5.6
focal length: 18mm
Hyper focal distance = 2.9 meters

if i made the focal point for something which was 2.9 meters away does this mean everything past the 2.9 meters in the background will be sharp? But then in the foreground everything is also sharp? or is it 2.9 meters backwards from the 2.9 meters/hyperfocal point which will be sharp in the foreground

When focused at the hyper focal distance, everything will always be sharp from exactly half the HFD to infinity, ie in the case above (on a crop format APS-C camera) from 1.45m to infinity.
